"Police spokesman Lt. Joshua Mecimore said a preliminary investigation indicates the crime was " motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking " and that Hicks is cooperating with investigators."

How sad and senseless is this? I guess the next time you get pissed off about another person's driving (or parking) behavior, count to ten and take Doug's advice.

When I was about 19 years old (a long time ago) I flipped a guy off, only to have him stop in city traffic, get out of his car and try to physically extricate me from my delivery van. I'm glad I was wearing my seat belt. That was the last time I ever flippped somebody off. It's not worth it.

You just never know what kind of crazy you're going to run into when you leave your house each morning...

When I got back to the ad agency I was working for, I told the story to one of the account reps. He said, "Sounds like a Vietnam vet." He was a combat vet himself.

I honestly can't even... I watched American Sniper, Lone Survivor and Enemy at the Gates in the last few weeks. I can't imagine how badly going through shit like that messes you up.

In Boston, it's not unheard of a for a few people to get shot every year for parking in someone else's street spot that they shoveled out.
But in the Carolinas? I have no idea why this would be.

I friend of mine who has lived in Boston for quite a while was saying something about how she wasn't okay with the claiming of cleared spots on the street. Not sure what the general consensus is in Boston, but some some Chicagoans chimed in about it as well.

It's a thing that people have been doing here for ever and ever. You shovel a spot out, you put a chair or barrel or something in it to mark the spot.
People regularly get their cars re-buried, tires slashed, paint keyed, and occasionally, stabbed or shot if they take someone else's plowed out spot.

Yeah, I honestly have no problem with it. Seems reasonable to me (the first part, not the second!), considering the effort required to clear a spot. Does the city have an official position on it?

It's not really legal, and sometimes they do enforce it, but mostly they turn a blind eye.
Can't remember if it was the mayor or governor who got asked about it in our last blizzard but he just sort of chuckled saying he thought a couple days was reasonable.
