It's a relatively new video, at least new to me. All the other videos had horrible sound quality and this is by far the best one. Thoughts and opinions?
My opinion,
Lot of us have mixed opinions on Rennlist(Porsche forum). On one side, it's further differentiating the Cayman/Boxster from the 911 which is kind of a good thing, and supposedly this is going to lower the price of the aforementioned models. And it is something new from Porsche, the first 4 cylinder Porsche since 1995 and the first turbo-4 since the 968 Turbo/S/RS. So in a way, these are the new 944/968 turbos? That's kinda cool I think.
The bad: A car enthusiast friend of mine has called these new cars, "overly-priced Subaru coupes and convertibles". And the fact that the affordable flat-6 is now dead is annoying to me; but I suppose the "affordable" one is a used Cayman or Boxster now? And I highly doubt that this will lower prices at all. And it also seems weird paying up to $50-70k+ for a 4 cylinder car, but that's probably just me.
Overall, just mixed feelings, I hope it sounds good and not like a Subaru if that's even avoidable.

Who cares?
It probably makes more power and torque than the old flat 6.
Turbos fucking rule. Give it a nice loud blow off and I'm all over it. I'd rather have that over a flat 6 any day

I don't see how the number of cylinders matters. Modern 4's put down mite power than 8's from even just ten years ago. That's what really matters.
Sounds ok I guess, can't really hear the engine that well. Lots of 4's sound excellent, don't scoff just because it has fewer cylinders.

subaru called, they want their motor back"
jokes aside, over priced subarus? LOL I want some of what he's having. i dont recall the last time subaru made anything mid engine or rear engine, or something that could go toe-to-toe with the best (and some would argue it IS the best)
flats will always sound like flats. I would have liked it if they had gone with s smaller, revvier f-6, but meh, w/e

I'll be honest, I can't think of a modern 4's that actually sound good to me, I think it may only be the 4C for me and maybe a GT86. And exactly how am I scoffing? I said more good things than I did bad.

He has a WRX ironically, so it made sense he would make the joke. The smaller F-6 is for the 911 only now.

By that Subaru guy's logic, the Mclaren P1 is an overly priced BMW 530i (back when the numbers = displacement) since they both have 3 liter V8's. What silly logic.

I was going to say Abarth's sound good but the 4C kinda covers that. But yea, in that cayman video the noise was quite uninspiring.

They won't be lowering prices...if anything prices will be higher because the entire Porsche coupe range is going to get more power.

There are very, very, very few four cylinders that sound good. Particularly when those cylinders are not in a boxer arrangement.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm actually kinda-sorta looking forwards to this in a mixed way. I'm like 65/35 for this. Geneva and later shows are going to be interesting this year.

The problem isn't the number of cylinders, but the power delivery. The thing is many people would find an NA car making 300hp much more enjoyable than a turbo car making 300hp. I'm one of those people. Turbos are great, and they are the future due to the simple fact they improve thermal efficiency of an engine. However, as I'm sure you know turbo motors tend to be less responsive than their NA counterparts.

I know, that's what I'm saying. It's only a matter of how much prices will spike up because of this.

I just thought of something
Once the CPO base model turbo 4 Caymans with PDK are available they will actually be a sensible purchase for someone who wants a premium "economy" car. The gas mileage with the H4 motor and 7 speed PDK will be insanely good. And the reliability will be better than the 4C.
Sure the maintenance will be more expensive than an economy car, but that's the premium you pay for getting a premium brand.
The Cayman is going to be a sensible choice for college grads who are starting their first jobs and want to look good and have some fun without totally breaking the bank.

For some reason nothing screams turbo to me... No wastegate hiss, no crazy-ass induction noise, no muffled exhaust note. At one point it even sounds a bit superchargery... That's just me though.

Is it just my thinking or the next wave of appreciation comes from good, natural aspirated engine?
Seeing the above just make me want to grab Cayman GTS and/or GT4 in the next decade before they vanish.

A Cayman that sounds like a Subaru... I'm completely okay with that. Perfect candidate for UEL's and a straight pipe.

I actually was thinking in general terms when I had this thought. But I did then realize that you will be a college grad soon too.
If you get a high paying job right off the bat then you can skip the economy Porsche and go straight for a 911 or Cayman S :D

Ok maybe I was exaggerating, but 4's can sound good. Now that higher end companies are using 4's more often they will tweak and improve the sound ad time goes on.

Oh I didn't really mean to imply that you were scoffing, mostly just a generalization, more for type of chatter you find on forums.
4C, Abarth, Toyobaru twins, 944's can sound prettygood, AMG 45's (especially with the performance exhaust option), Subarus in general are loved by many people for their exhaust note.

Yeah, engines with more cylinders have exhaust notes affected by turbos as well. Even still, a 4 making 500hp will never even sound as rumbly as an 8 making 200hp. I enjoy NA engines more too, but luckily turbo technology is getting so good that you can't feel any lag on some modern turbo cars.

If you like your engine note raucous and bassy roaring down the main straight, this isn't going to cut it. That said, this is how I like my cars. Quiet enough that they don't hurt my ears DDing them and you don't need a set of earplugs under your helmet at WOT. When they're quiet you can hear each tire, and sometimes even noise from and in the suspension as you transfer load. And if these turbo 4s make the same power as the flat 6 but are lighter, and the whole car gets lighter, then I'm all for it.
