!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This is the best.
And it hits my OCD button with its 1-2-3-4-5 situation. It's a W123 with a 4-speed, and 5 cylinders!
The price is good. Condition is iffy, but at this price point, I think a mechanical restoration would be worth it...
But would it be worth sacrificing the station wagon I inevitably want?
Also, final question... If I bought this, and a ratty ass wagon that's sat in the woods for a couple years... Could I swap the transmission from this into the wagon and have a W123-4-5 Wagon?

Wonder how it got into the US - all the 300Ds sold here were automatics, if I recall correctly.

I use to have the D. Believe me you want the D.

My problem is... I kinda want the D for its practicality. I've been looking on craigslist for a wagon for quite a while now. And the only reason is because of how practical it is. I could do literally anything in it.
But this is a super nice price, and the right color, and with the right transmission.
But I've also heard how buttery smooth the autos are...
What do I do? Impulse, or wait? If I had to compromise, it would be on the trans rather than the body style, really.

For wagons, yes. Only autos here. But I think there were manual sedans sold here in large numbers.

I am nearly sure there were none because of our crash tests. Ask the seller - the trick is bumpers - if it doesn't have US bumpers, it's not domestic, it's gray market.

Well... I'd always say manual over automatic. But by no means is this a sports car. It will be slightly more fun with the manual, but you won't be heel toeing and bouncing it off the rev limiter. At least around me wagons command a noticeably higher price. Mine was an auto and I had no qualms/problems with it. That being said if you want a manual you may be very disappointed without one. I'd say take a look at this one. The trunk in these are pretty big, so you just need to decide HOW much practically you need.

Like, the kind of practicality where I can put a chest of drawers or a coffee table or bass amplifier in the back or lay down in the back and car-camp in it.

car camping no:( some of that stuff will fit but not the furniture. I'm honestly not sure if I have seen any wagons with manuals.

This one looks like US bumpers. Maybe it was the 5-speed that wasn't imported.

Nope - in those years in US America, the only time you ever saw a 4 speed manual was in a 240D, and there was no 5 speed. Trust me - I tried to buy a W123 but could not find the one I wanted. Wound up with a W124 300D in `87. Automatic, of course.

Alrighty. Interesting though. I wonder if the guy swapped it himself.

Or I could just be plain wrong. It's happened before ....
