My mom used the car I usually drive this past weekend since her van was in the shops and this morning when I got in it, I discovered the seat is now stuck at 90º.
Does anyone know how to fix the seat? I've tried whacking it with a hammer (this method came up when I searched the forums) to unjam the gears. I know the motor still works since I can hear the motor winding when I try to recline it.
I am even more determined now to save up for my own car with a manual.

Wack it with a hammer- Oh, uhh...
Wack it with an even bigger hammer.
Check if something is jamming the mechanism, or if it's damaged altogether. With knowledge of simple mechanics, it should be an easy fix.

Yeah, I think I'm going to try and see if I can get a screwdriver in there to dislodge the stuck gears tomorrow when I have more time. Apparently it's a pretty common issue with the car.

Regardless of what forums say, I'd reserve "hammer" for all but the very most frustrating and difficult problems, and only after you've exhausted common sense. Your mom probably adjusted it close to or past it's comfortable range of adjustment and now it just needs help getting back in that range. You could try getting in the seat and using your body to push in the same direction you're telling the motor to go. There may not be much you can do without taking a closer look.

Trust me, I've tried using my body to push the seat back. I've even tried straddling the seat and pushing it with all my strength. It's not budging. I'll give it a closer inspection when I have more time tomorrow. I'll try and see if there's anything lodged in the gears tomorrow.
