Please stretch your intelligence to the limit and learn how to merge.
If you have to floor the gas and someone else needs to slam the brakes, you are probably doing it wrong. Cheers.

I feel it's human nature to only want to merge in front of people so if there's nobody behind me, I slow down a bit so the world can just keep revolving a little smoother in case the guy that wants to merge thinks he's Vin Diesel and tries to shift into 12th gear with nitrous to merge in front of me, and jump over train tracks right before the train comes.

I usually have to floor it while merging, because 1.4l... People just don't know how to handle cloverleaf style intersections where the on and off ramp share a lane.

All I ask is for people in front of me in the on-ramp to get up to speed (or thereabouts) by the time we merge. It's much less of a hassle to be within +/- 5 mph of traffic when we merge, especially if you make the effort early so you don't have a bottle neck behind you.
This frustrates me...greatly.

I call them suicide exits. And while I try to be very aware, match speeds, and watch for turn signals, they can still be awkward at times.

The problem is relative speed.
If red and blue are both going the same speed, then scenario is the best.
However if red is moving very slowly relative to blue then it changes the equation. For example if red is accelerating from 50 mph while blue is decellerating from 70 mph, the amount of time for them to reach parity is speed may be longer than the remaining merging lane allows. And it that case it's more efficient for red to allow blue to merge in front.

The people merging onto the highway are typically the bigger problem here since they just need to give it gas and go. Also, turn signals. If the guy exiting the highway is not using turn signals, that only compounds the problem.

Oh come on, prius drivers will never learn to merge or match the speed of traffic they are merging into.... There is no hope.

A cop did this on me once. I was quite annoyed, and wished I had a dashcam.
