What happened to the post on Oppo: What Honda Should Do To Be Taken Seriously Again
http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/what-honda-sho…
It's GONE. There were something around 270 comments on that post last night... then it disappeared. What's up with that?

I know The Honda Man (OP) made another post later about getting some real shitty comments from FP people once it got shared there. Maybe he was just getting sick of it?

The guy probably deleted it because he suggested ridiculous things like an odessey Si but was taken like they were serious suggestions. I don't know if the post was meant in jest or not, but it wasn't the best article and got a lot of attention. Not too surprised if the author took it down because it got a different reaction or was read wrong or something and had 100+ notifications blowing up his inbox.

He said he got sick of the biteback and deleted it.

Lets remake it here :)
So then, what would it take for Honda to be taken seriously again? It was taken seriously at some point? I'll admit that I used to really like the '99-'00 Civic Si (or SiR in some markets).

It had some shitty comments. Not sure if it got FP'd? It shouldn't have been if it was.

You can delete your posts if you want. I had to delete a post of my friends car at one point because he asked.

I agree. Let's.
There seemed to me to be a few main valid points being made:
The Civic Si is not intense enough (and as a former owner of an '07 Si, and current owner of a '14, I have to agree).
How about a Fit Si, with the current Civic Si powertrain, as a Fiesta ST fighter.
A (truly) sport-oriented Accord, perhaps? Accord Si with the Civic Type-R drivetrain?
I'm sure there were other points, and I had intended to review the whole thread before it went away. But those two stuck out.
My '14 Civic Si is less frantic feeling than my old one. It lost something important, I think; should they bring the turbo Type-R powerplant here, that will get me back in the showroom. I like the size of the Civic; I don't think I'd personally go up to an Accord nor down to a Fit.
Then the next question I'd ask - what about Acura? Maybe similar drivetrains as options, but with softened suspension? The ILX was decontented relative to the Civic Si, adding leather and a few other benefits, but removing the limited slip diff and not allowing the tech package with the manual transmission. What if it really were made back into a step-up option, to move growing-up Honda owners over to Acura? I'm approaching 40, and I drive a "kid's car" Civic Si; I should be in an Acura, but there was no tenable option for me there.
So let's go - what's wrong with this line of reasoning?

He deleted it after getting attacked personally in the comments.

It's a car site.
Sad that happens here.

Wait that happened here on Oppo? that happens on forums and the Jalop front page.. but I thought we were above that here. Wow
![]() 02/09/2015 at 08:56 |

I think it got shared to the FP
![]() 02/09/2015 at 09:08 |

Oh, and to answer your question the OP apparently had a sore rump and deleted it :-/ What did you guys do to him?

That explains it then. Good ole front page- such quality

IMO Honda is just as relevant as they want to be. With every generation since the '99-'00 Si they've continually dumbed down, softened up, and enlarged their sporty cars. To be relevant outside of the commuter-only market they need to wise up, turbocharge their powerplants (the new Type R Civic is a step in the right direction), and give a damn. Simple as that!

Damn was going to link you his explanation post on why he deleted it but looks like he deleted it as well. Sum of the post was si everything (a good idea in my opinion). He was only really catching heat about his thoughts that the crz should be a 370 competitor and the accord si would compete with the m3. But a Fit si? Honda is crazy for not doing that. All in all a decent oppo article but bad fp material. I actually wonder about the thought process of fp'ing it to begin with.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 09:25 |

It got FP'ed because even though it wasn't meant to be the most serious, journalistic post Honda man had some good points and it could've provided a nice topic of discussion. However, since he didn't expect it to be FP'ed he was at the mercy of the horrible FP commenters who didn't like his ideas or the way he presented them.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 09:30 |
|
From what I've seen unpolished posts simply to start a discussion are great for oppo and terrible for the FP. Just seemed unusual since the FP usually picks posts that had more effort put into them/ clickbait top 10 lists.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 09:31 |

it got shared to the jalop front page
![]() 02/09/2015 at 09:35 |

You're right the posts they pick tend to be the more polished ones but it wasn't a bad post and the type of discussion it was meant to draw was a good one. It's just FP commentators suck ass and a lot of the good commentators are stuck in the grey while the "Ur car is teh sux0rz" posts are promoted by Jalopnik for some reason.

An oddessy si would actually make sense.

He deleted that post himself after getting flamed when it got shared to the FP.
His overall line of thinking was sound. Honda should make the Si 'brand' more meaningful.
Where he went wrong was suggesting that the Accord Si become RWD and compete with the Lexus RC F and BMW M4. When people politely corrected how impossible that was, he posted another thread on Oppo asking why everyone thought it was such a terrible idea.
It was a fun thought experiment, but I honestly don't get why Kat shared it with the FP. I know it's the weekend, but I felt it wasn't FP material. Just something to discuss on Oppo for a laugh.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 09:51 |

It got shared to the FP by Kat and escalated quickly from there. Oppo did have some critiques, but none were as bad as the FP.

No. No it would not. Not at all. No target market. Large development cost. No way to recoup cost. "Meh" response from anyone but a handful of people. The few people who like it won't buy it because they will want to buy it used.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:00 |
|
Well seeing as it is the same platform as the pilot, development cost could be spread over both platforms. If I ever have to buy a minivan, you can be damn sure it will be the sportiest one I can find.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:13 |
|
Would you though? Chances are you wouldn't be making that decision alone if you're buying a minivan. Not only that, but the Si trim is going to be expensive. On top of that, if you want a sporty way to haul kids then a wagon or even a crossover can get you what you want. I've said before I'd rock the hell out of a Flex ecoboost or an edge sport. Minivans with options routinely ring up at over 40k and the odyssey is no exception - a mid range trim is 35k so a highly tuned/optioned Si trim is going to be at or above 40k for sure. So how many people are going to convince their SO that they need to buy the 40,000$ minivan with *less* content and a worse ride than the 35,000$ trim level so that they handle better than the other minivans?

It happened after it was shared to the FP.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:18 |

if I had to choose a minivan I would. I will always lean more towards a waggon or if I must, a crossover, but I will always try an get the funnest, best handling version of any car, because what's the point of driving something you hate?
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:19 |
|
Same reason (I think) that there is/was no Mazdaspeed5.
I for one would have jumped at an MS3 powertrain in a Mazda5 microvan.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:21 |
|
I agree on the "don't drive something you hate" part. But the amount of effort it takes to make a minivan not something I hate is massive. You sacrifice a lot in some way that you don't have to with other vehicles. The new edge sport has a 310 hp/350lb-ft ecoboost V6. Should be a riot. The Flex ecoboost has three rows of seats and a pretty awesome interior. I'd pick those two for my 35-40k price point. Or even something like a TDI sportwagen or 3-series wagon at that price point. I just don't see how many people would pony up the money for a sporty minivan over the myriad of options that don't involve that much sacrifice for a little bit of driving feel.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:23 |

A few people did make their own. It was apparently a bit of a pain in the ass.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:27 |

So I saw. Car & Driver did so, for example.
Still, I can wish, and dream...
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:28 |

I'd still rather just buy a flex ecoboost and tune it to "oh, the ferrari appears to be struggling" levels of power.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:30 |
|
I second this statement about it not making sense. But maybe they could lower Si to only a cosmetic change and bring SiR back for the powerful ones.
With the Sienna SE selling pretty decently to those that want a sporty looking minivan, I think a sporty Odyssey would do pretty well too. And sporty Honda would definitely pull it off better than sporty Toyota.
![]() 02/09/2015 at 10:31 |
|
For better or worse, I'm just too attached to my manual transmissions to make that transition... yet.
Before getting my current Si, I even drove a C63 AMG. Bonkers, to be sure, but I just didn't feel as involved as I was seeking. Also tried a 2nd gen CTS-V that WAS stick, and it was just too much - I couldn't imagine using more than a bit of the power available.

I removed it, because I was getting sick and tired of the comments.

It was FP'd on Jalopnik.

Gotcha.
Sorry it came to that - I thought it was a good line of thought... but I wasn't able to follow up.
Speaking of following up, thanks for responding to my thread here.
