What's the reason for the red colour?

Kinja'd!!!

I went to Keystone and Skiatook last weekend to take pictures with friends. It didn't seem that bad there.

Okay, so it's natural? Looks like a lot of iron oxide.

There's lot of iron (in the form of iron oxide—rust) in the soil there. Since this is a shallow artificial lake there can often be quite a lot of soil suspended in the water, giving it the red color and murky appearance.

Yeah this is on Lake Thunderbird, or as it's colloquially known, Lake Dirtybird. The only other "lake" I've been to in Oklahoma wasn't nearly as bad. This is a picture from Lake Hefner, which I used to sail on. It's the reservoir for Oklahoma City's water supply, and you can tell in the picture that it's much cleaner.

Still pretty different from what I'm used to up in Michigan however:

Nope, C scow. They're pretty unusual in most of the country, but up north they're a fairly common club racer. The C and MC (sort of like a mini C that can be run with one person) are by far the most common boats at my local club. The cat rig is cool, and they're fairly high performance boats. Only things I've ever been on that use bilgeboards too.

My aunt and uncle have a house boat on Lake Murray. It's a good lake.

The Mississippi River gets like that in St. Louis. Muddy Mississippi.

As someone who grew up in Norman, I'd recognize good ol' Lake Thunderbird anywhere. There's a picture of me and my brothers standing right out in the middle of it in 1985 or so when the temps were sub zero for the entire month of February and it completely froze over.

Fun fact, until 1994 or so the bridge on Alemeda that goes over the north portion was installed too low and anytime it'd rain it'd completely flood over. If you were on the east side you'd literally be stuck for a few days till the water level came back down. There were articles in the Transcript every time about people trying to ford it and having to be rescued and there was always a nasty oil sheen over it from cars being submerged.

Ha I didn't know that! I'll have to take a drive out there when I return to school.

They raised the bridge in the early-mid 90s so it doesn't flood as much and the population out there grew enough that there are now escape roads to the north so even if it does flood there's escape roads to the north.

It's so weird when I go back and visit my parents now because the town has pretty much doubled in size from how I remember it. Campus, the airport, the soccer fields, and Main Street are the only recognizable parts. Everywhere else where there used to be fields or widely spaced small buildings are now packed with houses or busniesses. It's crazy. Population went from about 80k in the 90s to nearly 120k today. That's a lot of extra people in a relatively short time.

I've only been there for three years and there's been tons of new development in the area in that time. Many of my friends' parents are buying rental properties near campus, which are only going up in value at this point. Do/did your parents work at OU or were you there for other reasons?

Both of my parents got their graduate degrees from OU and just decided to stick around. Mom grew up on a farm outside of Enid and they met at Philips University(now closed) up there while getting their undergrads.

Nice. As far as Oklahoma is concerned I don't think there's a nicer place than Norman. One of the parents of some good friends actually grew up in Enid as well. Small world.

This passes for a lake in Minnesota. Also in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Though to be fair Minnesota also has a lot of nasty lakes .
