Here's a pointy knife-shaped car for your troubles.
Background Info: I'm an architecture student in a Design Build Studio. Having a daily carry knife would be extremely useful. I spend approximately 45 hours per day looking for a box cutter or X-acto blade (which should be extremely easy to find in an Archie studio, but aren't).
Anyway, I began checking online for a small folding knife and inevitably found myself on Kershaw's website. Thanks to their clever Speed Safe locking/opening mechanism, I quickly narrowed it down to the Ken Onion range of knives: Chive (small), Scallion (medium), Leek (large), and Shallot (large, discontinued). I would have bought one online there and then, but was scared away by the asking price.
Then I started looking around on other websites, and found the same knife for roughly half Kershaw's asking price. I was so excited, that I bought it immediately.
I'm now thinking that Kershaw intentionally overprices their knives on their website to exploit what Social Psychologists refer to as the Door-in-Face technique: The persuader attempts to convince the respondent to comply with a request by first making a large request that the respondent will most likely turn down; the respondent is then more likely to agree to a second, more reasonable request, compared to the same reasonable request being made in isolation.
Put simply, people will scoff and run away if you give them an absurdly high price, but will be very likely to buy that same product if you drop the price substantially (even if that discounted price is still relatively expensive).
I went set myself a budget of $50, but ended up spending $62 because I thought I was getting a $115 knife in return. Social Psychology at work.
BTW, the knife I bought is a Kershaw Rainbow Chive. It's small enough to fit in my watch pocket (that silly mini pocket inside the main right-hand pocket), so it won't get in the way of all the other crap I keep in my pockets. Also, I think the rainbow finish is just too ridiculous not to have.

I got my Leek in bare for $28.00 from an Amazon lighting sale a few years ago. I love it, so does my boss, so he bought an orange one.

Holy crap, that looks amazing. Now I want one (not that I need one, since El_Uly sent me a Gerber for Christmas), just because it looks amazing.

That's how a lot of discount store work. Kohl's clothing store is a good example. They mark everything up by 50-60%, and then put it on "sale" for 50-60% off. Makes you think it's a great deal, when really you're only paying MSRP.

Exactly. Nobody pays $90 "regular price" for a cheap Croft and Barrow dress shirt.

I have a silver Chive. Love it, I've had it for years.

I have the same knife... I actually gave them out to the groomsmen at my wedding! Good choice. Also, to reinforce the theory, have you looked at msrp on watches lately?

Every knife manufacturer does this. Every single one. For whatever reason, it's standard practice in the industry. It's annoying because I'd rather just buy the knife directly from the manufacturer's site, but have to look elsewhere for a reliable seller instead.
The Chive is a great knife, though. I DD'd one for a couple years.

I carry one of these, destroy the blade & change it out. I can't really carry a nice knife because I would destroy the blade.

I think every knife manufacturer does that, the prices direct from them are so much more than anywhere else. I think they don't actually want to be in the retail business, but figure someone's willing to pay the high prices, they'll sell direct.

I'm also a Ken Onion fan. Kershaw has done a great job with his creations, sometimes great sometimes fantastic depending on the year. The Chive is a world-beater. I have a couple of them myself and my wife keeps the pink one in her purse.
The reason for the crazy msrp is simple; small brick and mortar stores have the right to charge that much. As official Kershaw dealers, they do not want you going to the actual kershaw website and buying the same knife cheaper! I have actually been in a store that was charging close to msrp on them.

I guess this post shows how infrequently (never) I buy knives. The last knife I bought was the Gerber Bear Grylls multitool back in my Freshman year of college (2010). Before that, I only had a Swiss Army knife when I was a Boy Scout. Now that I know, I'll only use the manufacturer's website to browse the model I like most, and then go find it for cheap on some third party site.
I'll take 911 RS for $5000

Opinel doesn't! Of course, they're knives are inexpensive enough that it's pretty much impossible to find them cheaper.
It doesn't feel as sturdy as my Kershaw, but it's prettier, cheaper, and I prefer the blade.

I love my olive drab Leek. It fits into my watch pocket (albeit at a bit of an angle). Great EDC knife.
