And now Im a bit freaked out. I hit a fire hydrant tonight and I only damaged my passenger door, no damage to the hydrant. Ive never been in an accident before and I didnt know what to do, so I just went home. But I hung out in the parking lot with my brother for about an hour before I left and no one came over to me, so I dont think It has been reported. Would that have been a hit and run? If It is, Im reporting it in the morning and I'll do the right thing. But for now I have to locate a new passenger door for a 1993-1997 cayman blue metallic Ford Ranger XLT Supercab. The damage:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Im really worried Im gonna get in legal trouble over this. My mom is telling me that It snot a hit and run, but Im not sure

It's not a hit and run, you're fine, stop spazzing out.

How the hell did you hit a hydrant with the door?

That sucks. Well on the positive side, its just one door you have to replace. In my case, I crashed in December because the rear end got loose and had no control over the car. i hit on to a wall with the back of the stang. It was raining and the road was very slippery. And the damages are the rear bumper, tail light, The exhaust muffler, The trunk looks fine but doesn't close correctly and the side panel is a bit dented. Oh and the gearbox makes some "somethings wrong" noises when the suspension is working, like on a speed bump.

I think its not a hit and run, and you say the hydrant didn't look damaged.

At least it's just the door and not the cab side.

You *might* be able to get a painless dent guy to pop it out - it's not badly creased.

Otherwise just steal Nibbles' door and swap it with yours.

I should have got a photo of the hydrant. No it was an sub 5mph collision, If I had airbags they wouldnt have gone off. I dont think it was possible for me to damage the hydrant at at that speed. I am really lucky its only the door. 1 more centimeter and I would have had to do body work

Yes, only the door, think on the positive, out of the negative.
The positive thing i get out from my crash is that my car is still driveable and didn't have to get a tow truck.

How much would the painless dent repair be? a new door is $60 form the junkyard, assuming I can find one in the right color. But thats alot of labor on my part

Okay positive: the door still latches, It still locks and the window still rolls up and down even though the window mech rattles a bit.

No idea, I've never used them. Plus PDR prices would probably be different between Wisconsin and Colorado.

But a salvage yard door probably won't have the matching striping on it. If they can PDR it, once the dent is out you buff the paint transfer out.

Tohru is pretty much spot on. Try to relax about the whole thing, could've been a WAY worse (E.G. my first accident)

You'll be fine. If it wasn't spurting water into the sky, I don't think the cops will chase you down.

This isnt actually my first accident, its the first one to cause any sort of damage. Back when I had my old tires I got stuck at a stop sign and got out to push, I rolled back into the stop sign. No damage to my truck or the sign then. Also I backed into a concrete pillar before I had an understanding of how long my truck was, again no damage to my truck or the pillar. The ones that left no evidence I dont consider to be accidents, but I guess they technically were.

Bah, as long as the police didn't show up, It's an oopsie, not an accident. (though in my first accident the police didn't show up, but I did cause a couple grand worth of damage to the car)

It's not a hit and run. You don't have to report it to anyone. You're not headed to Guantanamo for hitting a dog toilet, trust me.

I backed into lots of things when I first started driving ('74T-bird). If whatever you hit isn't damaged, it's not an accident. Of course, I drove mine for a few months with almost no brakes (long story), so I drove into lots of things with both ends of my car.

No, you aren't in trouble. It's not even an accident, just a mistake made. Keep in mind that it could have been much worse, my first accident totaled two cars and landed someone in the hospital. And I have a feeling you could easily find a door at a scrapyard somewhere.

PDR in nyc is usually more than $60, but like tohru said prices definitely vary

Seriously. Pop the dent, remove the yellow, live with a minor battle scar

Probably nobody was even watching you to know that you hit it. If there was no damage to the hydrant, which you say there wasn't, you have literally no reason to worry about it. "Hit and Run" refers to multi-car collisions, I think. Or maybe also property damage. But this property wasn't damaged.

Only thing you need to worry about is dealing with the damage on your own vehicle.

That dent should pop out- it's only in the door skin sheet metal. Pop it out and you've got some character. Worse comes to worse, doors are a dime a dozen for Rangers. You could pull any passenger door off any year Ranger post 93 and it will fit, although electronics might be different.

I don't think PDR will be enough here. He has some serious deformation and it even pushed far enough to contact interior door parts. You can see it above the yellow steak where it's popping out and paint chipped off.

bah, the dent on my passenger-side back quarter panel is probably 3x bigger than that (dent was there before I got it), i think it gives the car character.
