And I'm losing faith in humanity. As usual, there are people insisting he should have gotten a bike. Now, there are people saying his health will decline and he will suffer from a heart attack, and there are pessimists insisting that taxes will drain a lot of it.

Okay, you don't have to contribute, but be happy that an honest, hard-working man is receiving charity from his fellow Americans. Holy shit, that's not so hard.

I expect nothing more from commenters over there. Or is it nothing less? Either way, friends don't let friends read Jalopnik comments. Just say no.

Haters gonna hate. Also, I doubt taxes will come into play, as each donation might be considered a gift. Gifts below a certain amount are not taxed.

Jack Baruth called Jalopnik commenters "notoriously stupid" earlier this week. He's not wrong. I mean, except for us. Probably. Maybe.

I'm quite sure he'll have to pay at the very least Federal income taxes on the 310k plus the value of the car. I'm very happy for him, he is the exact type of person who deserves it.

I'd be lying if I wasn't questioning why he didn't purchase a bike to assist with at least some of this commute. Reading some of the comments though they made the point that the Detroit area is not set up for bike travel and bike theft is quite rampant. Personally I still would have tried it but that's me. He also didn't go looking for this attention at all. It just so happened to be bestowed upon him. It's nice to see something good done for the average Joe every once in a while.

Actually, I'm not sure he'd have to pay federal income tax at all. A bunch of people gifted him small amounts. If none are above $14k, then they all may qualify as individual gifts.

Maybe a CPA or a tax professional will chime in but as I understand it since the total amount of gifts he will receive this year far surpasses the limit, he will have to pay taxes on the amount over the limit. I would think he would have to report it as "other income" It would be great if he could keep it all but I just don't think it works that way.

I'm a financial advisor with in depth knowledge of the tax code involving gifts. The $14k annual gift exclusion is applicable to the gifter, not the giftee. If 100 people each gave me $10,000, I'd have $1 Million tax free because each person's gift was below the maximum annual gift exclusion. However, if ONE person gives me $1 Million, taxes would be due for $986,000 (unless the gifter uses his lifetime exemption for the transfer, which counts against the estate tax later).

I'm certainly no expert, I guess I was thinking about things like gameshow prizes and lottery winnings and assumed the same would apply.

Those two examples aren't "gifts", but I see where you're coming from.

I'm glad he got something out of all this for doing what he's needed to do to get by and sees some appreciation from others for just getting on with it and that now he can get to work in the comfort of his own car once more.

With regards to taxes I think it's awful that they are even being discussed I mean any sort of tax on a gift is terrible. I'm glad that where I am we don't pay any tax on a gift or a winning say horse racing bet or lottery win. We only pay a small tax on the interest the gift or winnings make.

Even if he had a bicycle; 20 miles or 15 miles is still a long way. Dude needed a frickin car. Its not hard to understand.
