McKinnon isn't even the fastest in the league.

I don't follow NHL that close, who would you say is the fastest?

it actually is widely regarded as MacKinnon but being a blackhawks fan and the fact he always makes our defense look stupid I can't like the guy

probably Carl Hagelin of the New York Rangers. He's won the fastest skater tutle in his only skills comp appearance and even at the end o his shift he's as fast as an average NHLer. I don't know if he would win but it would be close.

Jonathan Drouin of the Tampa Bay Lightning won the fastest skater competition at this season's All Star Skills Competition. It's a ridiculously short race, though. The thing is, hockey players aren't built for long runs. Their game is short bursts and acceleration. And their shifts are typically about 1'30" long.

I know hockey players are not built for long runs, I used to play hockey. That's why I was shocked. Hockey players are "explosive" not something you'd want in an endurance race :)

Yeah buy drouin only won because MacKinnon wasn't there. The all star game uses the same size course this video did and mackinnon was still about a second faster than what drouin did.

I've been around NHL players since I was in diapers, and I've never seen someone that consistently fast. He is unique.

Drouin did the fastest lap in the skills competition but who knows who actually is fastest. Grabner, Hall, and Hagelin all are in the mix with Mackinnon

It's sort of like having a race between a horse and a human. The human will get off the line faster, and over a short enough distance will win the race. But the human has no chance at anything longer. If you ran this same race with 10 NHLers and 10 speed skaters you might end up with a 50/50 split of winners because it's such a short distance. And with an even shorter distance the hockey skater may win every time. But over 1000 meters, the speed skater will win every time.

I actually enjoy watching speed skating, and not the short track stuff. I like the long distance races. Maintaining strength and form and power over thousands of meters is damned impressive.

Ya he did but they only do half the rink (long ways) in this years skill comp which is kinda different than this. If they timed all the NHLers I think the results would be different since only the guys invited to the all-star game can compete in the skills.

In the past, didn't they run the fastest skater race using the whole sheet, having the players start from opposite sides of the red line? It seems it would be better to give them the whole end of the ice to turn, not just the face off circle.

I love watching the long races myself, 10k meters and still not dying, that is impressive.

I love watching long track speed skating as well. As a Dutchman, this is only natural, I suppose. I'm not much of a skater myself bit I would love the opportunity to try on a proper track.

I guess it's only natural for me as a Norwegian as well :P The fact that I live a few minutes from the viking ship (the speed skating rink for the '94 olympics) may have something to do with it as well :P

Shifts are closer to 0:45-1:00 for a regular shift. A 1:30 shift is actually ridiculously long.

You are right, and it always surprises me to see just how little time they are on the ice at a given shift. When I was younger, I was always perplexed why a guy who had just scored a goal went and sat on the bench. "He scored, and they're taking him off the ice?!" I know now that his shift was over. And then you see those defensemen who get stuck on the ice during a penalty kill, particularly in the second period, and they are just completely and utterly gassed.

Sorry for the two replies but wanted to make sure you see this. I found a list of average shift times from the 2014 season. The longest average shift is 59.8s and the shortest is 34.4s. Only 56 skaters our of the 751 listed have shift averages of 50.0s or longer.

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nhl/stats/aver…

This is a pretty cool list, you can sort by the different columns and pick different years too.

No apology necessary. Thanks for the list. It looks interesting.
