The pinnacle of the most exciting auction I have watched, with just about every lot selling above Artcurial's estimate, lot #59, the last un-restored Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, a 1961 model in the collection since the early 70's an previously owned by French actors and a top Peugeot designer, set a possible record for a 250 GT California Spider. Bidding started at €6 Million and quickly reached €11 M, and, with excellent work by the auction team, reached a final hammer price of €14.2 M, or roughly $15.9 Million USD. Of course, that is before the buyer's premium, which for this auction was staggered under the following conditions:
€0 - € 30,000: 25%
€30,001 - €1,200,000: 20%
€1,200,001 and up: %12
And then you have to pay the French TVA, or value added tax, which is somewhere around 7% I believe.
So, you raise your paddle for € 14.2 M and think, "Great! What a Steal!" And then then collection agents start coming for you because you owe an extra € 1,704,000 not including regular French TVA. Oh La La

If it's anything like Barrett-Jackson, there's a 17% buyer's premium on top of that.

Right. All of the details were explained very quickly in French at the beginning, but I'm pretty sure that there was a %12 buyers premium on top of that.
