Your correspondent is in Paris for Rétromobile and being cheap has found a cheap self catering room. It has a coffee maker but no filter for same so I went to reception with my grievance. "There aren't any filters for the cafetière".
"Non", agreed reception. "Il faut les acheter, en fait"
"You have to buy them in fact", which took searches of several shops before coming up with forty for the princely sum of 35c. So there you have it.
If you're self catering, you're self catering for your coffee too.

When it comes to coffee, though, no price is too high. My wife and I were near St. Denis about 15 years ago, and we stopped in a Turkish café to get some coffee and write some post cards (remember post cards?). I ordered, "Deux cafés, s'il vous plait." I got two small steaming cups of India ink with two giant cubes of sugar each. I think it took the enamel off my teeth. That's one of those ordering mistakes you only make once.

Yes, you only get four types of coffee in France: un petit café which is an espresso, a café au lait which is what would be a latte in Italy and a décaf version of either of those.
By chance I got quite a good petit café for €1 just now which is good for central Paris.

Yes, I ordered the café au lait for the remainder of our trip. One bit of culture shock for we Americans is that all refills in Europe cost money. In America, the cup of coffee you get in a restaurant is bottomless, meaning it comes with all the refills you want. Most sodas are the same.

You pay in France, yes, but not in all of Europe. In Sweden if you go for the cheap filter coffee you usually get refills. Anything out of an espresso machine is going to be charged for.

I always ask for a "café long" (or a cappuccino, but tsometimes they do a Venitian instead...) since the regular one is too small for my taste.
And 1€, that is quite cheap for France I have to say.

Sure is. I offered €2 (or rather 2€ because France) and was surprised to hear "un euro! "

You know it's really hard for us to understand and adapt to the anglo-saxon way of writing numbers and money. I always put the sign after when I write, then I change it for it to be correct. I always had a hard time with the comma you use to group numbers also. But I'm treating myself, so it's okay now :)
