I've never actually been to an opera. I feel that that is something that I must change, just for the sake of trying something new.

I love it, and they're great if you're looking for a special date as well. Depending on what you see the plots are even pretty exciting by modern standards, if a bit campy. Typically those would be mid 19th century to early modern Italian opera, although some people will say they're "not as sublime as Mozart/Wagner/etc." These people are snooty fools and should be ignored. I can still appreciate an earlier or more modern opera, but mostly for the music to be totally honest.

I'm assuming this is Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss? I've never seen it with a title in another language. I love the music of R. Strauss, particularly Der Rosenkavalier , as well as any and all of his symphonic works (I'm a professional trumpet player, so we tend to really dig Strauss). Where is the production?

If you're into opera, you might enjoy this article I read last night in the Belfast Telegraph. It involves Salome. And boobies.

Yes, that's the french title, and I'm seeing it at the Opéra Bastille here in Paris. Didn't know we had any professional musicians on here! What type of work do you usually do? I played trombone, euphonium and tuba in orchestra when I was high school, always wanted to get back into it but haven't been able to yet. I'll have to check out that article, thanks!

Is it being performed in French?? I have three degrees in trumpet performance, which really aren't doing me any good at all. I play principal trumpet in a very good regional orchestra in Texas. In Austin, I freelance, and have been a sub with the Austin Symphony, Ballet Austin and the Austin Lyric Opera. Full time, though, I'm a stay-at-home dad. I've never been that much of an opera fan, though I've actually been on stage for a few in my youth, and I did write my doctoral treatise on trumpet excerpts from the opera repertory. I have a fondness for the later Romantic works, even getting into the Expressionists. Some of that stuff was way, way out there. And I played in the orchestra for a performance of Lady Macbeth by Shostakovich. Holy crap, what a bizarre piece, but what an incredible thrill to perform. Anyway, enjoy the show! I look forward to hearing about it in your Oppo Review.

Haha I never considered doing an Oppora Review! I would imagine it's being performed in the original language with French supertitles (this is what they did when I saw Die Entführung aus dem Serail last month). Usually I can keep up pretty well so it shouldn't be an issue. As far as operas are concerned, that same period is my jam . My girlfriend and I saw Turandot this summer and were blown away (yes, yes, tragically flawed opera yadda yadda yadda). This will be my first experience with something like Strauss, but I'm looking forward to it. I've never heard the Shostakovich piece, I'll have to give it a listen. Anyways, it's super cool that you keep getting to perform, best of luck going forward!
