That is what was in the tread.
I got a friendly reminder last night from, I guess, fate that it's nice to have a full size spare and keep a decent pair of gloves in your car. I don't even know what that thing is from but my guess is a snowplow.

Looks like a round-head steel tar paper nail to me. Some are like my picture, others have the cap pressed around the head like what's in your tire.
Could also be a screw and washer, but I think that's less likely. It will depend on whether the shank is ribbed for your displeasure or whether you've just been screwed.

It's about 10 mm in diameter so I think it's a little too big to be a tar paper nail. The washer is definitely captive to the object.
Also, excellent word play, I was going to try to think of something witty but my mood is a bit flat right now.

Might be a hammer-driven anchor, then? They have these in a variety of sizes and head design:

It's a teeny-tiny Boudica thing - like Clarkson used on his Fiat police car.

Holy shit. I think you might be lucky it didn't picture the wheel as well. I've seen that happen from large things like this.

That sucks. At least it wasn't in your sidewall, like this gem.
I'm guessing what you picked up was some 20+ year old concrete anchor that rusted it's way out of something.

I think it's a nail from the True Cross. If so, you have desecrated an important relic there, and a couple of pipe-swinging Jesuits are on their way to get medieval on your ass.

Yeah, I caught it right away. The tire was still mostly round when I stopped to change it. The rim didn't look damaged after the tire shop took the tire off so I think I may have dodged a bullet a little bit.

I had one of those in the heel of my shoe on a 1 mile walk a couple years ago. It was just long enough to poke the tip though my sole every time I put weight on my heel. That was annoying, Didnt break the skin though

No joke. It definitely could be a concrete anchor. It was in the center of the tread but the tire shop said that when they took it out, it damaged the belt and the reinforcements and they didn't want to attempt a repair.

It's a little large to be a cap nail. I've seen 2" long cap nails before, but they aren't as heavy as the spike in the picture above.

My post was before he got it out, and when only that second photo was up. The one that doesn't show the threads on the end.
