It's time we had a chat. New Oppo is not working out. At least not for most of the senior members still here. This part of the site was always meant to be an off-topic and open exchange. Now, the second that your post doesn't match the new motto of "Jalopnik: the Amateur Hour" someone is on here bitching about your off topic post. And heaven forbid you do 2 in a day, or 4 in a week. Holy shit.

I work in a dealership, so I'll use this analogy: Jalopnik is sales and the service front office. Oppo was always the shop. It's not safe for public consumption here because the fuckin yahoos aren't supposed to be back here. They might hurt themselves and sue us. But instead, the mods and the new world order have decided we need to be something else. The techs now have to work in front of their customers inside a glass box with Nerf tools. Basically, not able to do what they need to.

Well, that's a fine kettle of fish. I hope that this new PG/sanitized experience makes the rest of you warm and fuzzy all over. It just leaves a huge hole in my browsing habits and a gap in my online support. It used to be a community here, and I for one think we're worse off for these changes.

The whole concept of "What Oppo Is" is pointless to debate because the closest it has ever come to being defined was when the old forum was called offtopic, and back then it was far from off-topic from front page discussions. This is a thing in the industry, actually. I read about more and more indy shops who put big windows between waiting & service areas, and cameras in bays feeding TVs for clients to watch. Complete transparency, literally and figuratively. But that's beside your point.

I haven't been active on Oppo for too long, so I don't perceive the same changes. I'm also not easily offended, and the things that do piss me off are much bigger than anything that needs to be talked about here. That said, the front page has taken a turn, with seemingly less news & features and more click bait bullshit in the name of content. I can do without that, and I can do without people using Oppo like Facebook (which I don't use), burying interesting posts with pointless junk several times a day. But it's not for me to change, so i just scroll on past the shit to the stuff that's interesting or posts by contributors who I've learned are worth reading. That's why you follow people.

It's the internet. The community that was there 7 or 8 years ago has been multiplied by quite a bit I'm sure. more people = more source of potential problem.

This is the exact same reason why you don't live in a house with 30 roommates. It would be a freaking mess. Between those that are sleeping together, those that have broken up, those have different political opinions, those that stink, those that are too clean, those that have been living in that place forever and the new one that just moved in and so on and so on... life is extremely difficult.

Oppo is a bit like that... with just a few roomates, it's alright, but it gets quite a bit messier when many other arrive...

Funny story, the club I loved in Chicago is located -still- at 2350 N Clark, across the street from an amazing storage building with an Egyptian motif, essentially next to the Lincoln Park Zoo, which amusingly enough is where I first read Robert Anton Wilson's The Illuminatus Trilogy . This is only amusing if you're familiar with the book itself. Especially when a quarter of the book was read just outside of the primate house.

Yes, but once again, Oppositelock has grown massively. And furthermore, I find that the community on Oppositelock is great if one is willing to be a participating member, which I see a lot of. People making jokes and supporting each other is the norm on Oppositelock, and notice how when bullshit shows up for one member, others say "hey, shoot me an e-mail" or "hey, let's hang out since we're in the same city"?

This site is what you put into it. If you want to make friends, shoot the shit, and hang out, then come join the fun, but if you think everything is going downhill and there is no sense of community, then that's because you're not taking part.

Sometimes walking away is the best thing. Yes people giving me crap for posting about my ranger isnt okay, but me calling attention to it is not a mature or responsible thing to do. Im not saying we should do nothing but crying out because of it isnt always the best solution. There are other ways to do the right thing

Don't be a hypocrite, Denver. You can't seek succor for things near to your heart and then tell others their concerns are invalid. Bigotry on any level should be confronted. That's my point. Sexism, racism, antisemitism... those are bigotries. I will call that shit out on Oppo whenever I see it. I'm not conflating those issues with someone saying "FFS, stop talking about your car/truck already!"

There's a difference between bitching about inconsequential stuff and legitimately offering a criticism of the less than savory parts of Oppo. I agree with you that the whining needs to stop, but I will never agree with you that people should refrain from standing up against legitimate concerns like sexism, racism, and dickishness. (Aside... I'd say that guy camping on your post and compiling a list of stuff about you qualifies as diskishness and therefore warrants maybe a friendly heads-up to the mods, if only because you are being targeted specifically and maliciously, as opposed to a more generalized comment along the lines of "guys... limit your posts to X number per week, please").
