This is an off topic blog, why are you griping on almost everything I post today? Do you want me to stop posting on Oppo all together? Cuz I'm not doing that

I know Oppo is an off-topic place but I'm going to be blunt here. I'm griping on those particular posts because they are of such little value, they contribute stuff of such little relevance or interest to this community that they are not worth the space they take up on the main page of Oppo. Judging by the recommendations my comments are receiving on those posts, I'm not alone in my opinion. Also, 2/6 isn't 'almost everything'.

No, I don't want you to stop posting on Oppo but to cut the amount you post back certainly wouldn't hurt.

A) Bischons are the shit, my wife has one and he's a boss.

B)Come to Cigar Lounge and people won't bitch about off-topic posts. It's basically old Oppo.

Blow it out your ass. This is exactly what Oppo is supposed to and used to be used for. At least until the big switchover and all of you freshmen came in with your opinions of what you think this place should be.

No worries. But you'll definitely escape the newfangled elitest who are running Oppo into the ground by switching over.

For pictures of people's dogs? That's some Facebook or Twitter level shit. This isn't what Oppo is supposed to or was ever used for. Oppo is off-topic in the sense that it was meant to take conversations about things that weren't being discussed on Jalopnik proper; it is and always has been primarily focused on cars. That's what brings us all here, together. Going a little off topic beyond cars is fine, especially when it leads to meaningful or productive discussion but you've got to draw a line defining what's relevant or interesting to this place. Like I've said, and as others seem to agree, the stuff I'm taking issue with is past that line. It's menial, meaningless shit.

Also, I'm fairly sure I've been around longer than you think (reading since 2010), I'll just let the freshman accusation slide.

2007, thanks champ. And off-topic means not drawing a line. It means not about any one particular topic. If the man wants to be the dog guy, let him. Your version of off-topic doesn't have to be the same as him.

All you're doing is shutting down an active member and pillar of what's left of this community.

Wow, 2007. Thanks bub, this isn't some seniority dick measuring contest. I was simply refuting your accusing me of being a freshman.

If he wants to be a dog guy, all the power to him. Hell, I love dogs, I've always had shepherds.

Also, I'm disappointed you couldn't keep your disagreement to this conversation and had to make a separate shit stirring Oppo post about it. That said, I'm not surprised.

Back to the point:

I don't want Oppo to be entirely cars. While I enjoy the serious, blog type articles Oppo produces nowadays, that's only one part of this community. The random discussion with generally likeminded people are what make this place whole. What Oppo is, should and will continue to be is somewhere in between a shitty social network and a blog for Jalopnik to pawn free content from.

I don't pretend to be all knowing in what Oppo should be, nor do I command any authority over that but I disagree with the notion of not drawing a line. I mean, if everyone starts posting about every menial thing that happens in their lives, Oppo would just turn into another stupid social network.

Should I post if I park poorly in my own driveway, every time I go for a drive or if my dog looks at me funny? Heck, maybe I should inform people when my fucking balls are itchy. You have to draw a line somewhere and decide at what point you've got something of any actual value to Oppo.

I'm not asking for much, just something more than a constant flow of inane, menial, meaningless crap. Such things bury other posts that are worth arguably more attention than they'll get being pushed down the page too quickly. Put some effort into what is posted, please.

If you want to use a picture of you parked in your driveway, start a discussion about how people park in their driveways (drive forwards or reverse in, for example). If you've gone for a drive and want to post about it, talk about the cathartic effect a drive for the sake of driving can have, or take and post some neat pictures of something. If you want to post a picture of your dog, ask others about their dogs.

These sorts of things add value. They are bound to find more common interests beside cars and start meaningful, interesting conversations. They are what make this community wonderful and keep it cohesive.

Ease off a little. I understand that you have your ideas of what you like to see on Oppositelock, namely with regards to more car-related content. I respect and appreciate that. But if that's the case, don't bitch about others posting off-topic stuff in an off-topic blog. If you want to see more car-related content, consider providing it yourself. He hasn't broken any rules here, and as long as that's the case, he's good in the mod books. I look forward to seeing more car-related content from you.

Ah, I expected a reply from you at some point. I hope this evening finds you well.

While my initial comment(s) were nothing short of passive aggressive, I feel it was necessary to get the point across. These things perpetuate when everyone is nice about it and leaves it be.

I'm well aware Denver hasn't actually broken any rules, I never implied he had or that the mods should attend to his posting habits. The mods, yourself included, don't curate content, as they/you shouldn't; the community is self-policing in that regard. My comments go toward that purpose.

Seeing as you replied to the comment you did and respond as you have, I can't be sure you saw my latest reply to BugEyedBeetle: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/wow-2007-thank… I'd like to think it clarifies what I like to see on Oppositelock, with that not necessarily being more car related content. Please read it, if you haven't already, and feel free to discuss it.

On the subject of my posting habits, I've only posted occasionally for the last little while and I was hardly ever a regular poster but what I do contribute is generally car related. I can see a point about leading by example but I don't think I'll escalate for the sake of doing so. As I've always done, I will only contribute when I've got something worth sharing.

Oversharing is a problem, I'm providing my opinion in an attempt to curb it. This is clearly not an opinion I am alone in, as you can see from the number of recommendations my comments have gotten. I won't be letting that get to the point of harassing Denver, I do hope he takes my comments to heart though.

That was a very articulate and well-reasoned response, and I understand where you're coming from. Even for an off-topic forum, Oppositelock sees some random-ass posts once in a while. The only time we'll step in and curate that is if it is NSFW photography/video (which we have now prohibited), and if it's a little bit of intentional shit-stirring. That said, we do like to leave it to self-regulation. Usually, though, self-regulation has occurred exactly as I illustrated above - users providing more of what they want to see, learning from likes and comments who is interested in similar stuff, and building from there.

I appreciate where you're coming from, but at the end of the day, as long as the rules aren't being broken, there's not a whole lot to do about occasional surges in randomness. You're definitely not the only one, as I've seen others make similar comments. And as long as those comments don't cross the line into harassing anyone, I don't care what you comments you make.

Thanks for being able to keep your thoughts rational and ordered, and have a good weekend.
