how old do you have to be to rent a car in europe?
I'm planing a trip to portugal and I need to get from lisbon to faro one day...its about a 5 hour drive. Any ideas? I'd LOVE to rent a car and rip it down the coast, but IDK if i'm old enough (or if insurance will be nuts)
otherwise I'm looking at a train. thoughts?
have a funny for your time

I'm 20 years old and rented a car in Switzerland last month. I paid the normal rate plus a 20€/day young driver surcharge with Europcar. I think the absolute lower limit is 18, but I'm not sure about that.

If Portugal is similar to the U.K. concerning rental cars I believe you can get one at 18 but the choice is limited on engine size and a premium is levied if under 22 years old.

portugal I dont remember if you need supplemental insurance (supplemental fee though, 30-40/day), but I will check. How old are you again? Have your own credit card?

I don't know about age, seems like people have got that covered, but one tip, look for deals. When I was in France 2 years ago, I rented a Peugeot 206CC from Hertz through my credit union, and they cut me a heck of a deal. It was expensive because that car is in the "fun line", but they managed to knock about 20% off.

As stated, I'm pretty sure it's 18 although a young driver surcharge applies. I am planning a trip in Germany for the spring and have to pay a fee for being 21.

as long as the fee isnt stupid i'm fine with it.

Depends on the car. I rented a Polo with my dad in 2012 and enjoyed it so much I'm doing it again. It was about 50-60 bucks including taxes. Not incredibly bad when the car is a necessity.

50$ was the insurance or the rental?

The young driver surcharge. However, right after posting I re-read and noticed that you are renting for one day, no? I think it was a per day charge, and I'll be there 8 days. So it would be less for you. I am reserving officially tonight so I can get back to you on that.

Before you rent a car in Europe, double check with your credit card(s) and insurance company on what exactly is covered for overseas car rentals. A friend of mine went on a trip across Germany and some other places, and his rental car got dinged up while he had it parked somewhere. It turned into a nightmare of insurance coverage or the lack thereof figuring out who was responsible for what between the rental company, credit card, insurance company, etc.

Just saw your post. I was just in Lisbon in September, dad is there right now. Can't say anything about rentals, since we borrowed a car. I can tell you one thing, tolls are expensive, and you might pass by the VW factory depending on which highway you take. Which "Faro" is this? google maps says it's a 37 hour drive to Faro, Sweden.
