I have a car that needs a lot of work. What can I do to sell it? I don't want to sell it to a private party because it needs a lot of work, don't want to burden anyone. Should I sell it for scrap? Who would I sell it to?
Details:
2000 Toyota Solara v6, 5 spd manual
197k miles
Bad freeze plugs
Needs timing belt
Needs new clutch
Suspension issues
Basically it needs more work than it's worth. But what to do with it? It has some value, the engine works, exterior is decent, could be someone's car again perhaps, then again maybe not. How do I get the most for what's there? Pretty quickly too, I can't let this sit on Craigslist for 6 months, I have stuff to do. Suggestions?

Get a quote on the scrap price, list it on Craigslist for double or triple that. It'll sell.

List it as a "mechanic's special" and someone will buy it for cheap. Find an OK one listed, and run yours for 1/2 the price.

Places like Pick-n-Pull will usually pay a bit more than scap value and come pick it up.

I'll take it for a couple bucks and part out/"racekar" build.
*Shrugs*

List it for parts or repair, but given the high cost of Toyota's OEM parts, it will be sold for parts, unless something is special about it.

I'm not sure a mechanic would want it. My mechanic said he didn't know anyone who's interested because it's a manual and those are unpopular in LA for good reasons, and it really needs a lot of work. But I emailed a scrap yard so I may try your suggestion.

Make an offer, you can throw the engine and transmission in an MR2 and go real fast.

Are you in the Los Angeles area? There are a couple of junkyards in Sun Valley that will pay above scrap for a dead car and come pick it up. Pricing depends on how many of your car they currently have in their lot, I think. I sold my Miata to the Pick Your Part ( www.lkqpickyourpart.com ) on Pendleton (which is also my favorite place to go for cheap parts around here) after it got rear-ended, and they gave me a couple hundred bucks for it.
