James Robertson is a 56 year-old Detroiter who works in Rochester Hills, MI. There is a distance of 23 miles between his work and his home. He has no car - his Honda Accord died - so he takes the bus part of the way and walks the rest. "The rest" being 10 1/2 miles each way. This man walks 21 miles each day to get to his job.
Sometimes, people give him rides but most of the time it's just him, hoofing it to and from the bus stops (southeast Michigan has spotty mass transit). His days are long but he has a stellar attendance record because he does this every single work day.

I'm not an internets techster so I know nothing of your crowdmoney kickfunders and so on but how hard could it possibly be for us to raise a few bucks and get this guy a car? He's a true American Hero and Heroes should have cars.

I watched the NHL All Star game last week. They used a format where the team captains picked their teams. The last two players picked received a new car as consolation. So they gave a brand new car to two people who can easily buy two. Or more. I'd rather they give a new car to people like this. Or donate one to Meals On Wheels. Or buy a van to give to those who support the homeless.

Being in Detroit maybe one of the big three will step in and give him a car or maybe even Honda will give him a new Accord. He deserves it. I'm 21 and my commute to Uni was only 6 miles and that battered me I couldn't imagine going double that at 53. What a Guy.

Around here we have a charity called Good News Garage which handles accepting and distributing cars for the needy. Is there anything close to this in MI? It's probably where we will give my mother's '97 Buick LeSabre in a few months. They fix up what's wrong with the old cars if they are reasonably repairable and give them to people just like this guy.

We don't really care where the car ends up, if we can get the thing to MI, send it to this guy! But we aren't ready to part with it just yet (she's still using it), and it has an ABS and CEL light. ABS not so important but we'll need to address the CEL.

Impossible in the winter but not sure about the summer. I do know that riding a bike at night in those areas would be dangerous on the roads and kind of tough on the sidewalks.

Also, donating a car to this man might not be a solution at all. A nice thing perhaps but if maintenance and repairing it is not an option will he not be exactly this same predicament in time X?
Don't get me wrong, as someone who has worked and lived below the poverty line, walked 7 miles to get to town and then more to get to work, has a brother that still commutes under his own power everyday a similar trek (medical reasons mostly)... I get wanting to help him. Calling him a hero and saying he deserves a car does no one justice.
We should be looking at what we can do for real fixes here. Find this man a closer/ better job. Find him a house closer to the factory. Get Detroit to fix some of their problems, clear out 8 mile, better mass transit... No clue, but something sustainable that would actually help.
I know my approach is complex, and difficult and would take years to realize, but it would actually solve the problem so that when Robertson is 66 he is reliably able to make it to work, and not walking again because his free car died.

He should check with the local churches. Mine usually has a car or two on standby for needy families whose cars crap out. Typically we'll ask for them to help in the thrift shop or kitchen (not required) once they get back on their feet and will also help them with putting together a financial plan if they'll accept the help.

I see your point but he explains the housing thing and jobs in Detroit are hard to come by. I'd love to see all those problems fixed too - since they would help everyone - but this guy sounds like one of the ones who would appreciate the help and put it to good use.
On my morning walk (from a parking lot) to law school, I was often accosted by street people asking for money to buy "food." This was on a stretch of Wilshire (L.A.) near a restaurant that served carry-out breakfast. Several times I asked what they would buy with my money and when they actually described food I took them in to the counter, said they could order and I paid for them.
I'll give someone the benefit of the doubt sometime. (I also had a couple of the people tell me to go F! myself and walk away when I asked what they were going to buy).

That's pride fucking with him. He's willing to trade significant wear and tear on his body and daily personal risk for what seem to be total poverty wages. It's his right to do it. He SHOULD be rewarded for his work ethic but it's obvious that his employer doesn't believe that. If they believed it he'd be driving to work every day because he owned and could afford to operate a car. They're getting a hell of a deal on his employment for sure.

Don't get me wrong here: I strongly would like to see this guy get a car. If I could provide 10 people who really would appreciate and use one well, he would be one of the recipients.
My issue really is just that we see entirely too much of the missing the forest for the trees. Sign up on Change.org for example and see how many people are describing real problems in world and then asking for action for one person.
I think if the generous people of Oppo, Change, the Komen Foundation etc. took the current ratio of effort that seems to be 95% the persons affected and 5% the problem and inverted it we would finally see real change and at a phenomenal rate.
(And I realize we are agreeing mostly here, I just so badly would like to live in some of the near utopia's described in Star Trek I guess...)

Not impossible. You need tires with good grip, you need the right kind of brakes, you need to dress in layers, and you need the will to do it (which I think he has in spades).

Dressing in layers with good gloves and warm(dry) shoes is very important. I'm sure he already knows this.
All of this is a lot cheaper and easier to maintain than some hooptie car.

I'm a fan of your columns, but in this case, that sentiment seems a bit close to the "Poor people should stop being poor" argument. Yes, it's tough for him, and yes, it would be great to crowd fund a car for him. But as far as the "American hero because he walks" point, if he can't afford to fix a 1988 Honda, he's probably in no position to quit and find another job—or even have a single day off to look.
He's not walking 21 miles to taking a stand. He's doing it because that's what impoverished American lifestyles require.

this is an incredibly cool concept and I think an orginization like this taking donations would assuage alot of the fears of some of the commentators here worried about the maintenance or the guys "worthiness." This!! When my only car died beyond redemption and my budget I got out the bike (at about the same age as him. The commuting by bike stabilized my diabetes, dropped my weight saved me enough to get another car and I'm in the best shape I've been in since I was 40. Winters are a bitch (Indiana) but I've got a car for the bad days now. (BTW the bike was free)

Is this dude a hero? No. Is he utterly respectable for how he's managed to make things work for himself? Absolutely.
Could he get a job closer to home? Maybe. Could he get a home closer to his job? Maybe.
But he could also use a car to make his current situation better. It really does make a difference.
I was laid off for six months in 2008-2009 with a new baby and had my car repo'd. It was hard finding a job with no car. I was given a sweet '97 Volvo 850 T5 for free and I was able to find a great job 29 miles away that completely re-launched my career and I'm pretty successful now. And I was still broke for a while and had to spend years digging out of a financial hole, but I learned how to fix this car on my own with my other car nut friends. Drove that car until 2013.
My brother was out of work for over a year and finally got a job but had no car anymore and had to share with my mom. When I got a new car this fall, I was able to gift my Camry to him. He was able to take on more hours at work without making it harder on my mom.
It's a little thing, but its huge.
Steve, thank you for not being a jaded prick and for bringing this one man's story to light. I'm sure there are others all over the country in similar situations. We can alll be more aware of those in need around us who are making the best of their situation and help where we can.

He walks farther to work then most everyone else who complains about not getting a closer spot in the company parking lot. He works farther to work then most people are willing to walk in a mall parking lot. I'll see if I can find someone who knows how to set up some sort of fundraising thing for this guy. As you can tell by the commenters, the idea of a working class is completely foreign to most people in 1st world countries these days. The vast majority these days thinks sitting at a desk for 8 hours constitutes hard work. I have a 65 year old Vietnam vet who works for our company. The guy has bad knees yet he's able to stand for most of the day and he does his job better than anyone else. Then Ive got a guy half his age who goes home early every other week because his back hurts. It blows my mind how the younger guy can look at himself in the mirror every morning. Pride is a concept foreign to a lot of Americans nowadays.

I think it sucks for this guy, but there are a lot of people down on their luck and not everyone can be "Oprah'd".
Part of the 23 mile journey he faces is that it is his choice to do, there are always options.

Walking 21 miles a day isn't the easiest thing, either. As a guy who has had to walk 5 or 6 miles in Midwest winters because my car wasn't up to the task, I feel this guy, but I still fail to understand why he hasn't remedied it somehow by now unless he's only been walking it for a few days.

Keep in mind, he's of the age where companies still offered pensions. If he's been with this company for a long time, he might have one coming to him, not to mention the benefits that come with working somewhere for a long time. He may not make much where he's at, but it's probably better than having to start over again- not to mention, how many people are going to hire a 56 year old? I mean... it sucks, but let's be realists. There's clearly a reason he's done that shitty commute, so telling him to get a new job likely isn't feasible.

Everyone has a hardship and everyone struggles; some more than others. What makes this guy different or more deserving from anyone else who has the grit to do "tough" things. What about the single mom out there just barely getting by who's car just broken down and doesn't have a way to get to work. Do she need help less than this guy? How about the guy willing to do what this guy does but can't find a job? James' situation may be tough, but he has more than a lot of people do.

If you read the story, he explains that the house and job are things he does not want to give up. A new job closer to his home might be an answer but he lives in DETROIT. Good-paying jobs there are not easy to find.

"Get Detroit to fix some of it's problems" Thats been going on for well over ten years, and in that fix they have reduced mass transit options. Thats not a counter argument (as much as stating the obvious) but a cop-out.
