Was gonna hit post at 12:00 am and say “first post of 2016,” but i realize some oppos are there. People in Samoa are the first to experience a new year, and I’m on the U.S. East Coast. Time zones wear my brain out. HOW AM I STILL IN 2015 WHILE SOME PEOPLE IN THE SAME UNIVERSE ARE IN 2016? Also, why do time zones have intervals of hours, and not minutes, or even seconds?

Actually, the first to enter the new year are those just to one side of the international date line. So Samoa has been there quite a long time by now.

True. But who is good at maths this late at night?

I could have said that because you are in Ireland we are several minutes ahead but it made no sense.

It would be Eastern Russia and even then it’s not that simple - the Russian far east gets there two hours after Samoa. List here

Try living in Niue where it’s 12:30 Thu, east is Samoa where it’s 13:30 Fri, east of there is Tonga where it’s 12:30 Fri.

Or Kiribati where it’s 13:30 Fri, straight north is Honolulu where it’s 13:30 Thu and to the south of Kiribati is the Cook Islands where it’s 13:30 Thu.

Time is all relative anyways. It used to be kept by sundial, but the time by sundial varies everywhere. When railways started becoming common they standardized time by the hour to make operation make more sense.

It takes the earth approximately 365 days to orbit the sun and it takes approximately 24 hours to revolve around its axis. What we consider time and date is basically arbitrary

Because we live on a sphere, and our sense of temporal displacement is tied to the sun’s position in the sky. The sun will not be in the same position in the sky everywhere on Earth. Because of this, everyone’s sense of where they are in a relatively small snip of time (say...24 hours or so) will differ relative to their position on the sphere.

One day in a given year will be the last day of that year. After that, each time zone will transition into the next day. This happens for every day that passes. It just that this time, the new day brings with it a new year as well.

Happy New Year! Hope it’s a prosperous and happy one for you all. I'm happy to finally join the Oppo conversation.

Also, don’t know the etiquette on this, but how does one go about getting authorship? I’m about to buy an e320 wagon, and I’d love some insight/help!

I promise to actually contribute to the community, and not just take.
