Ze Audi partz department wantz $170 for new lock cylinderz. Any one know if there’s a way to remove these without the key? The rear bar is way to far forward to carry anything long and there are bolts sticking out of the rack from an old kayak carrier. It doesn’t look like there are any bolts and I tried remixing the circular things on the side but I don’t know if they come out

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Edit: ask I want to do is remove the cross bars not the entire roof rack system. I called a locksmith and they want $100 just to unlock it never mind a key

Try using compressed air to freeze it, then smash it with a chisel and hammer? That’s what my grade 11 chemistry teacher told me would work if I wanted to steal a bike.

Many OEMS rely on the aftermarket to provide accessories like this. For example, my Chevy Cavalier had a Thule aerobar setup that was rebranded as GM Accessories. Same goes for my TT. It may be worthwhile to find a bike shops or outfitter that is an authorized Thule or Yakima dealer and see what they can do. they may be able to identify the lock cylinders and have access to a master key to unlock them. A new set of 4 lock cylinders from Thule / Yakima is typically under $50

I do want to leave it on but the rear track is in the middle. I want to move it back as far as possible which would be another 2’. I’m thinking about buying some 2x4s and they are way to close together to carry them. There are also those bolts sticking up I want to get out

Did you ask the PO?

I can ask for you on Audizine and see if anybody knows what to do?

Those look like Thules, they may have made them for Audi. Maybe see if a bike shop has a Thule master. Also, there should be a little number stamped in the face of the lock cylinder, which you can order new keys by.

As you say about the ‘circle bits’, see if you can get either a smallish screw driver or small chisel under the bottom bit of the circular covers.

Is there any place on the outside of the barrel with a three or four digit number. You should be able to get replacement keys cheaper direct from Thule or on eBay. Also try checking out your local or nearest Audi group or forum with members in or near your area as just by flook someone may have a key to at least take it off and then get a key or two copied at key cutters.

Following your suggestion I looked up a YouTube. It seems easy enough. I tried bending a finish nail but even that was too thick to fit in the lock

Yea sure. I tried to sign up but I couldn’t do it on my phone and I didn’t remember when I was at work. I tr little circle things of but it didn’t seem like the pins would move

Also your Audi dealership or Thule stockist may have a master key to remove or just move the bars for you. You may need to tip the person a few dollars if need be.

There are no numbers anywhere. There is an Audi logo under but from what I can see it’s only load rating. I got the circles it and hit the pun with a screw driver and hammer and they didn’t budge

I think your best bet is an Audi forum or as I added in a separate post see if a Thule seller or Audi dealership has a master key to move or remove it.

This, those look like standard Thule lock cores. Stop in at a bike shop or sporting goods store that would have these. I know we have plenty laying around our shop...

It’s a fairly simple lock. It shouldn’t be that difficult to pick.
