July 1943. Florida coast , night time: The K-class blimp standing order was to find anything by radar and then radio for assistance. It’s only armament was a .50 caliber machine gun and four depth charges. They found something - A U-boat, U134, was running right at a group of merchant ships and would begin sinking them before any help arrived. So US Navy airship K74 commenced a bombing run at 250 feet. U134 fired 20mm cannon fire at the blimp. The .50 caliber gun sprayed back from the gondola. They passed overhead and dropped two charges. The blimp landed on the water and deflated. They evacuated, all rescued a day later but one, who was eaten by a shark. At first the crew was disapproved of by violating instructions. The blimp commander got a distinguished flying cross and the crew received Navy commendation medals in 1961 after German records showed that U134 was damaged from the attack. It was sunk a few days later by a bomber while trying to limp home to Germany on the surface. Quite a long time for a confirmation.

Eaten by a shark isn’t really something you would think is real.
