E34, as the sun went down, with a manual lens.

All shot between 1600-2400 ISO, 40-year-old manual focus 50mm on my 5D2. Super quick. My neighbor and I were actually here at the same time for a few minutes, and talked parents, grandparents, cameras, lenses, and cars, as the sun went down on a very cloudy day.

No better way to enter the ‘90s.

(not sure whether it’s jpg reduction or my laptop screen that sucks all the red midtones out of the images— if there are any photo-savvy ‘nauts out there who want to chime in, please do.)

Thanks! It was a quick one, and the sun was going down fast. He’s done a lot with that car, and I just love it. I had about 10 minutes of light with a lens I’m far from used to, and we were talkin about old people stuff.

He’s done a lot of cosmetic stuff over the last couple years, sounds like an engine and transmission rebuild are coming up next. Great guy. Beautiful car.

It’s a fantastic piece of late-1980s design. Maybe the best. And everyone who looks down on E60s needs to take a closer look at E34s to understand ‘em.

(NOT AT ALL A BIASED CAR DESIGNER)

Yeah there’s a fair amount of euro things happening, and m-systems without the turbine covers. Looks amazing. I’ve mostly decided on an e34 as my next car, they drive so well

Yeah, the turbines are very long gone.

1969 Leica 50mm.

Man, these came out really well. I don’t know how the iso performance compares exactly to my T2i but iso 1600 on my camera is what I’d consider the very edge of usability at best and anything past that looks like garbage.

Full Frame or nothin, when it comes to digital.

(Unless you’re a crazy sports shooter, or whatever)

(Also, the 5d2 was kind of a landmark camera. I got mine in 2010, and I probably won't replace it before 2020)

I keep thinking about a 5d2 but if I spent that much money on Canon I’d probably go all the way and get a cinema camera.

Well, it pretty much depends on whether you want to take still or video. There are so many unbelievable options now, it’d be really hard to choose. I bought the 5D for still images— and now phones do better everything. So. There’s that.

I’m more interested in video than stills. Phones may be better at snapshots but I don’t believe they’ll ever be better than real cameras.

Just depends on what you want to make. My ex-neighbor is a video editor, and a couple years ago she said that 95% of the raw footage she had to work with was shot with 5Ds. I’m sure the landscape has changed. There’s been a new generation of video in the last couple years.

The real trick is in editing, I think.

It’s all a trick. All of it. My mind hurts from trying to one man band everything.

Gotta nut up and put in a split prism for focussing. It's really hard with such a small focus plane.
