2016 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

Back in 2011, Ford made a huge mistake. By phasing out the beloved Crown Victoria, they handed the huge North American law enforcement market to Chrysler (mostly) and GM. They thought that law enforcement agencies would buy the Crown Vic replacement, the FWD-based Taurus/Explorer duo. It didn’t happened.

Kinja'd!!!

Now, let’s go back in 2011 and pretend Ford made the right decision and kept producing the Crown Vic, what would it today in 2014 ?

This is my take on the elusive 2014 Crown Vic.

Kinja'd!!!

Power would come from the 2.7L Ecoboost instead of the old 4.6L

New more aerodynamic front clip with ruggedized bumper

LED lighting package

Body would use Aluminium panels much like the F150

SelectShift® 6-speed auto w/progressive range select & tow haul mode

Start-Stop tech with batteries in the trunk to provide power during long idling period, increasing the car’s longevity.

Tesla-like interior screen instead of resorting to a laptop

What is your idea of a 2015 Crown Victoria Police interceptor ?

What do you mean they didnt buy the replacements? The police love the Explorer. Overall Ford still dominates the market. http://www.government-fleet.com/news/story/201…

But... it’s 2015?

Ideal would be to keep it body-on frame, in order to keep it easy to repair, but find some places to lighten it. Maybe aluminium bits on the frame. Non-turbocharged engine would be good too, keep it simple to reduce costs and downtime when shit gets borked. New transmission and stop/start and some batteries would be a good idea, but to keep the battery parts cost-efficient, reliable, and also keeping the weight down would be a big issue.

Yeah, it was implied that it wouldn’t be a new gen, just a updated/re-engined version of the panther

yeah sorry for the year, times fly, seems like 2012 was last week

I perfectly understand Ford’s reasoning for not doing something like this, but I really wish they had.

There are plenty of departments who’s idea of a great 2015 CVPI would have been a 2011 with the last 1 scratched out and replaced with a 5. My local PD bought up a bunch of 2011s before they stopped building them, didn’t even need them right then, they just wanted to make sure they had some more before they got something new.

I've got a 2008 CVPI, and I think the things they would have wanted would have been better mileage, a little better riding suspension, and that's really it. It's got all the space in the world, they're familiar with working on it, and they already had laptop stands and equipment racks made to fit it.

Is that just what you see or based on sales numbers?

I look up more recent numbers: Ford says it had 61% market share in the first half of the year (2015) among law-enforcement agencies between its two police vehicles, one based on the Taurus full-size sedan and the other on the Explorer SUV. Both are called the Ford Police Interceptor.

Which means the other 39% is split between both GM and FCA.

They’re pretty bad. The twin turbo engine is decent though.

But the FWD compared with the tiny V6 engine is horrible. The P71 was such a better car.

Yeah, in the Chicago area it’s almost all Exploders now.

Some of that may be because they’re built here. There’s a lot of local loyalty.

Good call - put a turbo engine in a car that spends most of it’s time being abused and thrashed in the service of the public.

Our Troopers are aggressively taking to the Chevy Caprice and Fleet Impala. Pretty soon the CVPI will be totally wiped from their inventory.

For ours its Tahoes and Chargers. If you ever seen a weird blue Charger, it was probably part of the MSP at some point.

I really don’t see any of the Caprices or Impalas anymore at all now that I think about it.

I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of F-150 ecoboost being abused and trashed in the service of the public.

Also, aren’t the Taurus/Explorer turbo as well ?

Also, also, Europe ?

Think of how much money police departments could save if they just kept buying the CVs from craigslist for a couple of grand, respraying, it, and bolting on the kit.

After Owning a CV, there is no way around an Ecoboost for better MPG.

Really an update to the entire drivetrain, some lighter materials for the chassis and body, and a full body refresh.

I think they could have ran the car to 2015.

Yes, but they could move production to elsewhere, honestly the Falcon is only sold in Australia and NZ. That was fords shortfall. Should have sold it elsewhere.

Austin PD is trading in their CVs for Explorers and Tauruses. So it seems like Ford is doing okay. Our local sheriff, though, is ditching their CVs for Tahos across the board. But then again, they still have to patrol some of the more rural areas of the county.

Engines were revised for 2011, and transmission options included the Getrag-Ford MT82 6-speed manual or the 6R80 6-speed automatic based on the ZF 6HP26 transmission licensed for production by Ford.

GT models included a 32-valve 5.0 L engine (4951cc or 302.13 cu. in.) (also referred to as the “ Coyote ”.) producing 412 hp and 390 ft-lbs of torque.
