It’s not period-correct, they say.
I’m trying too hard to make my old car look new, they say.
The F355’s reverse lamp bulbs are located too close to their plastic lenses, allowing the bulb’s radiated heat to crack and warp the lens. I can imagine lens warping can also be a problem in many other cars.
The solution is to swap in LEDs which consume much less power and dissipate much less heat.
Conveniently, they now make “soft white” LEDs which turned out to be a good colour match to my old bulbs. In the above picture of my reverse lights on, the right side has the new LED and the left side is the old bulb.
So it does look period-correct, unless you’re really looking closely when I shift in and out of Reverse and catching the instant-on-off.
The LED assembly is a set of 45 individual LEDs arranged to radiate in an approximately uniform sphere, like filament bulbs. This is important if you want your LEDs to look period-correct radiating through the lens.

Wait, you’re making your Ferrari less likely to melt itself? That seems like sacrilege. If the Old Man wanted the thing to burst the taillamps into flames, you ought to respect his wishes...you never know where he is these days!
