I plan on getting a sand rail as one of my first cars when I have my own place. I’ll try to buy it in September, when the people who bought stuff like this for the summer are finally realizing they’re not year-round toys and are selling them cheap, and then I’ll spend the winter trying to fabricate a removable enclosed body. Possibly even an enclosed engine compartment so that it can be driven in any weather, but that would require a new cooling system... I dunno. At the very least, though, it’d have a bolt-on canvas top and windows, and then a cigarette-lighter-powered electric heater.

that sounds like an awesome plan. the only downside could be registering it for the road

Tons of them are already street legal, actually. They’re usually registered as VW Beetles. In fact, it looks like the one you posted really only needs lights to be roadworthy.

Yeah, it’s weird. These and the more traditional fiberglass dune buggies are surprisingly easy to get on the street.
