My younger brother and 3 friends are going to embark on a day trip to NYC on Saturday. What should they drive? The choices would make Tavarish happy.
The first choice is his friends 2008 Range Rover.
Pros:
-super comfortable
-plenty of room
-will handle New York roads with ease
-will be fine in inclement weather
Cons:
-a supercharged Range Rover with over 130k on it*
-read above one more time
-poor fuel economy
-big car in crowded city
The next choice would be for me to let my brother borrow my 335i for the day. (Not my car pictured)
Pros:
-great gas mileage (I got 31 mpg on the highway with cruise on at 75)
-not a Range Rover with 130k+ on it
-smaller and easier to drive
Cons:
-not as much space
-manual, so driving can’t be split up
-not a Range Rover
-OEM runflat tires on it suck, they are noisy, make the ride worse, and aren’t that great in the rain
I really don’t know which I’d pick, probably the 335i because it’s my own. *The Land Rover has been maintained with an open checkbook by the family that has owned it since new, so I’m assuming it isn’t totally unreliable. I mean, they liked it enough to order a new one last year.
Driving in the city isn’t the biggest concern, they found a garage they can park at for the day and will explore the city on foot and by using public transportation. Trip takes about 3 and a half hours one way.

i say range rover. for two reasons
1) as you say, it’s been meticulously maintained, and the history s known. cars break if they are not maintained.
2) I wouldn't give any of my siblings my car without having them read and sign an agreement form that would put apple's to shame in length and complexity

Range Rover, all day everyday.

Range Rover, better to have their car break down or get damaged in NYC than your own! Also, everyone will be very thankful for how much more roomy and comfortable it is on a long trip like that, 3.5 hours in a coupe won’t be fun...especially for those in the back.

Range Rovers are pretty fun in the city actually

I totally agree with you on point number 1. Well maintained cars tend to be reliable. On point number 2, he knows exactly what’ll happen if he messes up the car haha.
Funnily enough, the Land Rover is actually at the dealer right now for a CEL, lol. The girl that drives it said if it isn’t out in time they’ll end up taking her dads car... Which is a fucking cayenne turbo S!

The back seat in it really isn't that bad! Plenty of room, but I always liked to be able to spread out on road trips. That's why I liked growing up with a minivan.

Range, for sure.

RR - I’ve driven something that big in the city, and it’s not really an issue.

Range Rover.
I’ve driven a Sequoia to the city many times. It’s not all that bad to park.

So here we are. Have some kind words with the dealer and go in the Cayenne.

Steve I was hoping you would chime in, any suggestions on things they should do/places to go while in the city?

Rover, because it’s not your car.

I’d go Range Rover. Roomy, comfortable and has authority on the road. Being in NYC he’ll probably want to look as menacing as possible when trying to drive around so people will actually move.

I’d be more concerned with the HPFP exploding on the 335i than the Range Rover leaking from the sunroof.

Tuna melts 0r pastrami at Eisenberg’s at 22nd (?) and 5th, see the Intrepid (we have a shuttle!) the Guggenheim on 5th Ave at 88th, the Metropolitan Museum, top of the Empire State if you don’t mind lines. You could go see the Freedom Tower, but it’s very sterile and not architecturally exciting. Strawberry Fields in Central Park off W 72nd, soup dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown, Chelsea Piers if you want to do some climbing, gaming, the New York Public Library if you want to see where some of Ghostbusters was shot. A drink at the Oak Bar at the Plaza. I have to go to work.

Haha, if only I would get to drive it!
