Kinja'd!!!

I’ve decided that George R.R. Martin created this character as an example of the exact polar opposite of what defines a successful life.

Kinja'd!!!

Then again, I guess it beats being a hugely successful douchebag.

I really don’t see that, myself. I think you’re reading far too much into absolute tosh, and George ‘even my initials need an editor’ Martin never gave any thought to his characters before he wrote them. They’re all just random actions, not the expression of complicated, multi-faceted personalities.

Let’s not beat around the bush here: Martin is one of the worst writers in a field unfortunately full of terrible writers (and that’s including David Eddings). It’s quite beyond me why his dreadful tripe was chosen for the big-budget treatment when someone like Robert Silverberg or Raymond Feist offers so much more. His work’s just tired-out derivative cliches, and I’ve played games of Scrabble with better-defined characters and a clearer plot.

Oh, let me put that in the style of a Gawker headline: Is Joffrey a Mary Sue?

Er, what? I don’t think that phrase means what you think it means. I didn’t comment on the morality (or lack of it) of writing tripe. And it’s really not particularly contentious to say that Martin can’t write, either: those who like his books tend to do so despite the complete inability to write, rather than arguing he can write.

At the end of the day, Martin needs an editor so badly that when he goes to the loo he has to take an entire pack of loo roll to wipe with.
