Or they are trying to kill me. Family got me a MIG welder for Christmas. I’ve wanted one for years. Now I need to learn how to use it.

A snake will kill you if you wear a black and white patterned shirt while trying to rob someone at gunpoint.

Welding is pretty easy! Just be smart about things and be careful. Always cover yourself and wear appropriate clothing (don’t wear sandals/shorts, wear a welding jacket, if you have long hair tie it back and in a pony tail, etc.).
If you feel too hot, stop and take a break. If anything, you should always take breaks every 15-20 minutes and always check your weld. Keep your workspace clean and organized. Makes cleaning up easier.
source - worked in a woodshop and taught fellow undergrads how to weld during my time in undergrad. I wasn’t really allowed to teach them but the guy who runs the shop said I could \o/

Youtube is your friend!
I learned how to weld with trial and error, I figured it out myself after a while. Always wear a mask and remember that the tip of the welding torch can get clogged easily.

I miss welding so much. I'd love to have a mig welder and a plasma cutter. Check around your local technical or community colleges. They might have some weekend classes you can take so you can learn how. Have fun!

Welcome to the brotherhood of those who hold lightning in their hands and use it to stick bits of metal together.
If your local community college offers a continuing ed/non-credit welding course I’d recommend it. MIG is pretty easy, and it’s even easier if you learn SMAW (stick) first.
Also, now that you’ve got the welder (and it looks like you got a Miller if that’s a pic of your manual) you will need some accessories if you don’t have them already. I STRONGLY recommend an auto-darkening helmet. Spend some money here - it’ll pay off in comfort and ease of work. The bigger the lens the more you can see.
You’ll want a MIG tool (multi-purpose pliers) and some nozzle gel. Pick up a package of contact tips while you’re at the store too. Gloves are a consumable item. Some folks recommend going cheap. I use Hobart gloves that are $30/pair and get excellent milage out of them, and they’re comfy.
You’ll probably need more Vise Grip pliers. They’re consumables too.

Have fun. And remember never ever weld on something you cleaned with certain types or brake cleaner. An extremely toxic gas is created if you do. Look up phosgene gas and welding for info. Remember to have fun though, welding is awesome.

craigslist, y0.
Currently in my garage are 2 Miller welding machines that I picked up off CL for way way way less than new. My TIG machine had less than 15 minutes of arc time on it when I got it. My MIG machine looked brand spanking new too. The plasma cutter I got is well used but it was owned by a guy that’s in charge of equipment maintenance at the Toyota plant in SA. He kept it in fantastic condition and then he went up to a higher capacity unit I got his old one for about 1/2 price.

Remember, welding shirtless gives you a really rad tan. As an added bonus there will probably be extra freckles from spatter, especially if you’re welding overhead. Also, don’t huff the CO2. That stuff will kill you. As will starting yourself on fire, huffing welding fumes, exploding the gas tank and electrocuting yourself if I'm interpreting the pictures correctly. Though if you're wearing safety glasses it appears you'll be safe. Cool gift, merry Christmas.
