"zeontestpilot" (zeontestpilot)

Someoneon FB posted this pic, which I find curious if true, because my wife is pretty much a redhead with brown hair. Except I can’t find a source for the study. Googling seems to take me to articles about this ‘idea’, but no one is telling where they got their information from. Does anyone know?
It honestly seems like one person wrote an article (whether fact or fiction), then everyone else copied the idea as well because they thought it was interesting and new. If true it might explain some things about my wife and other redheads, but information on the internet should be taken with a grain of salt. Which is why I’m here asking oppo if they might know. It’s worth a shot.
Also, I’d like to apologize for the pic above where it says “Oh my G*d Facts”. I don’t believe in using the Lord’s name in vain, but sadly this was the best pic I could find to demonstrate what I’m talking about.
Thanks in advance!

Personally, I don’t suppose he minds - but in any case, without a hyphen that could equally be ‘Oh my! God facts!’.
As for the idea, it’s supported by evidence, but not overwhelmingly so as I understand it.

Background: Age and body temperature alter inhalational anesthetic requirement; however, no human genotype is associated with inhalational anesthetic requirement. There is an anecdotal impression that anesthetic requirement is increased in redheads. Furthermore, red hair results from distinct mutations of the melanocortin-1 receptor. We thus tested the hypothesis that the requirement for the volatile anesthetic desflurane is greater in natural redhead than in dark-haired women.
Methods: We studied healthy women with bright red (n=10) or dark (n=10) hair. Blood was sampled for subsequent analyses of melanocortin-1 receptor alleles. Anesthesia was induced with sevoflurane and maintained with desflurane randomly set at an end-tidal concentration between 5.5 and 7.5%. After an equilibration period, a noxious electrical stimulation (100 Hz, 70 mA) was transmitted through bilateral intradermal needles. If the volunteer moved in response to stimulation, desflurane was increased by 0.5%; otherwise it was decreased by 0.5%. This was continued until volunteers “crossed-over” from movement to non-movement (or vice versa) four times. Individual logistic regression curves were used to determine desflurane requirement (P 50 ). Desflurane requirements in the two groups were compared using Mann-Whitney nonparametric two-sample test; P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results : The desflurane requirement in redheads (6.2 volume-percent [95% CI, 5.9 - 6.5]) was significantly greater than in dark-haired women (5.2 volume-percent [4.9 – 5.5], P = 0.0004). Nine of 10 redheads were either homozygous or compound heterozygotes for mutations on the melanocortin-1 receptor gene.
Conclusions
:
Red hair appears to be a distinct phenotype linked to anesthetic requirement in humans that can also be traced to a specific genotype.
20 people isn’t a massive sample.

Wow, 20 people isn’t big, you’re right. Plus, this only observes people with actual red hair. My wife has all the symptoms of being a red head, without having the Red hair itself.

False, its the other way around. Its both genetic to have varying pain tolerance, but redheads have a higher threshold of pain. Now, its not universal, but there are studies about it.
The part about anesthesia is correct, but again, genetic, not universal.

Of course redheads feel more pain. They are constantly being beat up for being gingers, are they not? :P

I don't know about that for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised that a specific group from a specific area would have unique genetic traits.

That makes more sense actually. Because I was wondering how they gauged it. A massive number of participants would be needed to get an accurate idea.

Half of my in law family are redheads, they call each other gingers and what not. Then one time I saw a redhead in public, and I told my wife “look, a ginger!”. She quickly responded “don’t say that out loud!” Double standards? :)

Symptoms of being a Redhead?
I don’t think they view it as a sickness. :D

There may be more recent research into the topic that a quick Google just now didn’t turn up.

Oh red hair and freckles is certainly a disease.
Its called gingervitis.

My wife is a redhead, darker red though, has some autoimmune issues, same as her mom, her 2 sisters have the more the red / orange hair, one is bipolar, the other, I don't really know, not much wrong with her but my opinion is poor taste in men, which has caused some pain.

Ha. She has really white skin, freckles, sunlight hurts her eyes, bruises easily; basically like a vampire.

Sounds like she’s “Bohemian” (Czech).

I’ve read this and have to say that I agree that it’s a small study but the anecdotal evidence that I’ve observed supports it. My wife is a redhead and she definitely needs more anesthetic to put her down. Here we are this summer with our niece.
No. We aren’t capable of taking a real photo when there are children around.

Don’t worry, I’m convinced my wife is a volunteer vampire as she somehow ‘disappears’ whenever a photo is taken. That or she hates pictures taken of her, but I prefer the former answer.
