I think I figured out what caused the missfires of a couple weeks ago in the S600. For the past few days the car has been taking about twice as much crank time to actually start, and it’s been extremely hot, humid, and wet here in North Carolina. And now, I’m going out to start the car after just getting back from work, so the engine is very very hot, so I can change the oil. It cranks, starts, and promptly dies like it has no gas. I’ve got some kind of fuel delivery issue that is related to engine temperature.
Anybody else want to offer a thought?

I’ll bet you need a crank position sensor. When they fail they go open circuit, especially when hot, which drops the RPM signal out. Very common problem on every engine in that family, from 6 to 12. It’s at the back of the engine, in the top of the bellhousing on the left side. Vapor lock is almost unheard of on electronically injected cars. Either that or you have a weak and dying fuel pump.

But I just drove it 20 miles home from work at 85 mph on the highway an hour ago!
It’s not fair!
I’m a good per....I’m a decent...I’m a reasonable enough person not to deserve this!

I had something similar to my mb, it was the maf sensor. Can you get live data while cranking? I’d try spraying your maf with mad cleaner

This is a known problem that I have an unreasonable amount of experience with. What year is your car?

I hate to be “that” guy, but I have to disagree. While you are right that crank sensors are very common that doesn’t seem to be what he is describing. There is a known issue where the fuel in the rails on V12’s boils due to heat causing excessive crank and misfiring on start up. The fix varies depending on year and AMG vs. non-AMG. But basically they pump the fuel up 1bar higher for the first 90 seconds at start up. There is even a bulletin for this.

Interesting, thanks. If anybody is going to be “that guy” on this one, it should be you, so I appreciate the info. I’ve never actually seen a V12 do it because I’ve only ever worked on a couple, but I knew they use the same sensors and the start/die symptom is something I’ve seen the 112s & 113s do time and time again. Cheers man, Merry Christmas.

One certain aftermarket performance fuel pump is suffering vapor lock issues but I’m pretty sure that OEM products’s don’t have any issues with this. Stalling after starting could be caused by a faulty idle control air valve. Maybe an S600 could have throttle by wire so it might not have separate valve.
Something related to the cold start temperature sensing or the idle air control is my guess.

It’s a 2004 S600.

Start simple...can’t hurt to check the fuel filter.

Ok. Hot restart adapter harness and possibly fuel pump control module, fuel pump, fuel filter. Unfortunately the harness is a hard to find special procurement part only available from a dealer. They will probably have to contact their FTS to get one. Last time I installed one though it was free, maybe you will get lucky and yours will be too.
The problem is that fuel boils in the rail. So with the modified parts they max out fuel pressure for the first 90 seconds after start up and it fixes 90% of the issue (the rest are crap fuel). There is a bulletin for this. Too bad you don’t have an ‘06 or newer because those can be fixed with just a software update.
