It’s just a blown trans cooler line. I’m sure the rest of the truck is in perfect order.

I’m genuinely shocked to see a Disco lasted 192k miles. That takes real dedication to buying a boat for your favorite mechanic.

What’s the worst that could happen

All the bad.

It’ll be an adventure

No joke!
It has to be on engine #2 at that mileage.

iv seen /owned a few 180k - 250k disco’s in the past few years. my last one had 200k on it before i had it.

No kidding? Ever run into the slipping sleeve syndrome? I heard it’s common on older trucks.

yes, my first one decided that all the engine internals needed to be on the road, later diagnosed as a sleeve slipping and it locking up. it then got bob tailed and had a range rover v8 engine gearbox put in and is now a entry level rally car used by two guys who live near me.

I’m a mechanic. We have a disco in with blown head gaskets with 30k on it’s second engine. Body at 120k.
30k miles for a head gasket.

30k is pretty horrible. The 3.8 Fords weren’t even that bad.

It would be great if you need a new hobby. The hobby would going to the ATM to take money out.
But hey-its worth a phone call. Just to hear the story of how + when he discovered the line broke. There are 47 warning lights on the dash-and i’m pretty sure that low trans fluid isn’t one of them. (and how could you tell-I’ve never seen less that four lights on a time)
BTW-I’ve done two motors on my bosses Disco. I actually had a sleeve go UP. Just a couple of thousands. Just enough to pressurize the cooling system under load.

Yeah, I already have one money grubbing hobby I guess two would be bad..
These come up often for $400-$800 often and it’s always tempting. Good ones seem to run $5k-$8k. I guess it’s a choice, buy for $500 and spend $6-$7k on it or spend $7k and hope nothing goes wrong!

Cheap aftermarket gaskets, cheap bolts, non-machined heads, re-used bolts all cause these to go out really. Factory head gaskets probably average 100k, then 50-75k for every set thereafter. Some do go a lot longer but it’s rare to get through two sets without an engine replacement.

Well you have significantly better chances of that thing needing both an engine and transmission than winning even a minor lottery.
When the trans lines fail they often take out the trans at the same time.
If you’re feeling particularly masochistic I’d be happy to give you a run down of common problems.
