Wait, timing chain failure damaged the crank? That's a pretty spectacular failure even for a timing belt/chain snap.

Think more in terms of cousins.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:21 |

It has a timing belt and chain? Holy shit.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:21 |

Nope, wrong engine, wrong branch.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:22 |

if it has a chain and belt, it will have to be a Audi of some sort
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:22 |

I think he might have taken some unclear notes there. Pretty sure it just had a belt.

I think his notes might have been foggy. Pretty sure it just had a belt.

Nope, but right branch.

Pretty sure that’s a Lambo.

Oh. Now I’m kind of disappointed, I was looking forward to finding out what mythical beast had both.

If it’s a chain my bet is Jetta with a 2.5. If it’s a belt, Passat or Jetta with a 1.8T
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:28 |
|
Oh so close.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:29 |

$6500 is pretty expensive for an engine replacement so it must be something newer and/or hard to work on. A 2.0 FSI could easily be had and installed in my area for $3,000 or so, and I don’t think it would double anywhere. So 3.6 VR6 Passat?
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:29 |

car has both timing chain and timing belt?

Eh, he took it to the sleazy dealer here in town so...
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:31 |

I think he got confused when taking notes. Just a belt.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:31 |

Nope, but you’re in the right neighborhood.

VAG not even once. Wait nvm.
But holy shit that much for a 2 liter turbo?! Hell I’d bet the guy thats trained to replace the 2.0 turbo in this charges less.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 09:59 |

Damn. I saw your earlier replies about his notes but was betting on the possibility that they are good notes.

Seriously - the VAG independent specialist in Charlotte charges between 3-4000 for a 2.0T swap.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 10:12 |

I was going to say Audi
![]() 12/23/2015 at 10:27 |

This is why you pay attencion to the reccomended timing belt change intervals.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 10:29 |
|
Or in the case of this particular person, pay attention at all to the maintenance needs of your finicky German car.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 10:32 |

I think I paid (its been like 6 years) $1500 for a junk yard pulled engine and the swap. Jeep 4.0L’s are simple, but damn. $3-4k is still a lot, but $6,500 for a pretty common engine seems crazy.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 10:34 |

That too. Imagine him with an Allroad.........

VW

Complete engines run $1800-2000 retail so I imagine the shops can get them around $1500 for the 2.0T. They’re complex and have a lot of stuff to reconnect but I imagine it wouldn’t take a professional shop more than about 10-12 man-hours to do the swap.
