If you saw my previous headache this morning, I got the call from the mechanic and it's exactly what I hoped it wasn't. Timing belt failure. Not good on an EJ engine. I'm having them take a crack at it. I don't have the time or proper equipment to do a lot of it so it's just easier. He's going to get me a quote tomorrow on some extensive work. They may even do bearings since it has 185k. I'm at least going to see how much extra it would be. Bummer. Really don't want to spend a couple grand right now.

YouTube in its infinite wisdom decided that watching a B5 A4 having its timing belt changed would be of interest to me and you know what they were right because holy shit you really do have to take the whole front of the car off.

Timing belt replacements on Subies aren’t too bad at the dealer. I think I payed $500 to have it done about a month after I bought my Outback a few years ago. Obviously the price depends on whether you bent up some valves and destroyed some pistons.
By the way, what bearings did they shop say they were going to replace?

Most likely ruined Pistons. I'll see if they can try to crank it over first and see if it's bad. But engine out and machine heads. Pricey. Haven't seen what bearings they will use yet
