The 718 is a lie fed to us by marketers.
We know that Porsche thrives off its heritage. There’s a reason they’re at the top of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Well, I’m here to tell you that the 718 which everyone is celebrating is a marketing stunt. The Boxster and Cayman are downsizing and turbocharging just like everything and everybody else - from the M3 and a slew of AMG Mercs to Ferrari. Only the infinite genius (read: infinite marketers) at Stuttgart have found a way to turn this into a positive - find a successful 4-cylinder from the company’s history, tie it to the new car...success!
Is the new Coxster anything like the race car it’s named after? Any more than the outgoing model? No. It has the same number of cylinders, that’s it. But it also has a turbo, so it’s different too.
Yes, because they’re Porsche and heritage is their biggest angle, they’ve actually gone so far as to brand the cars as 718 and probably to add some superficial styling touches to help make the relationship. But, like the 911 SC and Speedster that came before, don’t hold your breath for something that’s
really
similar to the car it’s supposed to represent.
Never let it be said that Porsche don’t know their audience. Old men, who both care about the past, and are obsessed with the tiniest production changes. They’ll love this stuff. They’ll gobble it up like so much Ferrari merchandise. But we can do better, Oppo. We who care about integrity and truth and
science, bitch
. Don’t fall into the Porsche marketing machine.

718 has three numbers, and a triangle has three sides.
3 = 3
Illuminati confirmed.

Yeah, of course it is. Most of the industry is marketing or market research based. You know what these cars will also be? Brilliant and better than the last generation. Shocker how progress works

Exactly. Just like the last cars were brilliant and better than the generation before. The existence of an old 4-cylinder race car doesn’t change this.
You’re right about the marketing/research focus. But some of them are less-obviously so, and less-obviously fake about it.

Actually, since it’s a Porsche, it only has two numbers.
Seven. And Eighteen.
Whether or not chemtrails are produced by the turbo four remains to be seen.

Porsche needs a flat 8. Nobody wants a 4 cylinder Porsche except hipsters with fake nostalgia.

flat 10
flat 12
flat 16
flat all the things

It really should be their “thing”, with marketing about balance and low COG. The V8s in the Cayenne and Panamera could easily be flat 8s; the Carrera GT could’ve been a flat 10 or TT flat 8, and the 918 should definitely be a TT flat 8.
A flat 8 would also give the 911 room to grow (NA and turbo), and distinguish it from the Cayman which could stay flat 6 but not be neutered on power (Cayman 3.6 turbo?). That might even make me ok with turbo 4 Boxsters.

HOW can that be TRUE if old cars with popup headlights and cassette players and all the COOL stuff are BETTER than new cars with yucky airbags and safety features and more powerful/reliable engines??!?!?

More like optional diesel badging on petrol models for extra pseudo-authenticity
