Car shopping with my parents is the most nerve-wracking thing ever. In BC, if you modify your car, you must report it to ICBC, get your vehicle re-certified, and then bend over. My parents don’t want me to modify my car, and I thought “that’s fine, I’ll just get a bigger car that I wouldn’t want to modify.” Then they said “We don’t want you in a big car, we want you in something like an Echo or a Fit.” The Echo’s handling was surprisingly turgid, and that’s the whole point to buying a small car. The Fit is out of my price range. On top of that, they want me to buy from someone elderly, which means all the cars I’m looking at are either boring or expensive. Merry Christmas indeed.

Sounds like it’s time to move to Murica and buy a V8 Muscle car, or find one up there.

We use Castanet in the Okanagan. And fast cars are also out of the question.

Anything with more than 6 cylinders is forbidden. And 6 cylinders is pushing it.

You could also, just not tell the insurance company about your modifications... Are they really going to notice a beefier rear sway bar, a strut tower brace, or better pads and rotors, god forbid you ever get in an accident?

If it were up to me, I wouldn’t tell them. However, my parents would make me follow the rules.

Don't laugh, Acura legend . Safe, reliable, boring to the untrained eye, but actually pretty quick and fun to drive.

Hmm. Cliche, but Miata could be the answer. Two doors, yes, but only two seats, thus reducing the risk of distractions generated by a car full of young people.
E36 or E46 sedan, if coupes are completely ruled out. That would let you scratch your wrenching itch by fixing the inevitable things that go wrong instead of modifying, as long as you can afford parts. :) Or maybe an E39 5 series - as long as you don’t get the 540 it’d be a straight six that may be low enough on power to satisfy. Bonus points if you can find a wagon.
Mazda 3? An RX-8 is technically four doors, but I don’t think that would fly. heh.
Maybe go Volvo. Swedish brick reputation for safety, and you may still be able to find something interesting.

Indirectly, I am. I bought my Cutlass, and had to register it in my dad’s name because I was 15. They issued the ultimatum of either give away the car or crush it, because we didn’t have that much time left in Guelph. Now they’re buying me a replacement, as they promised before we moved.

Some pretty murky waters there! It’s tough to make a suggestion on that without knowing any kind of budget, but would you be able to get away with a small car with lots of power? Like an old Speed3 or a FiST?

Not really, because they’re basically requiring me to buy an automatic.
