The 2000-2005 Impala used a magnesium dash support/structural brace to keep the body more rigid without adding weight.

They also seemed to use an incredibly thin coat of paint/plastic on the radio’s power button. I’m sure it was to save weight as well, amiright?
Strange how they would go to such great lengths to save weight in one area, while not care about it in so many others...

Yeah. I mean, it used an aluminum subframe! You would think that they could make the paint on the radio more durable as well.

I remember back in 2003/2004 , a guy I met had bought an Impala a year or two before. I was amazed that a car only a year or two old was already showing such signs of wear.
I just surprised that GM actually put that much effort into the Impala. I wouldn't say those were the most glorious years for GM build quality.

Yeah, they were classic Old GM. This finding coincides nicely with the fact that I’m hopefully going to look at a mint condition LS next week.

Aren’t these known for being kind of... terrible?

Dynamically, they’re turgid. Quality-wise, they’re mediocre. Reliability-wise? They’re pretty tough.

I think they did that so the car would burn more completely in the event of a fire.
I can’t believe that the current Impala (and Fleet Impala) is still on a platform that dates back to 1988.
I know.. Yes, it’s been stretched, squeezed and hammered to the point that it’s barely related to the W/GM10. But it’s still not a “clean sheet” car.

The current, non-fleet only Impala is on Epsilon II, which as far as I know isn’t related to the W Platform in any way.

I value turgidity in a car

I should be paying more attention! Thanks.

Well this also made out of 90% air and magnesium to make it more expensive and oversteery.

So.... wait. Does that mean there’s magnesium right by the firewall? And doesn’t magnesium burn kind of... explosion-like?

It’s not fine magnesium shavings, so it’s very difficult to ignite.

As do I. I find that turgidity gives a car nobleness.

Right, right. I was thinking of when it’s already on fire, if you spray it with water.
That’s part of the reason the death toll in the ‘55 Le Mans crash was so high. The car had a magnesium body, and when the firefighters sprayed it, it spewed white-hot embers all over the place.

No, only the 3.8 engined ones catch fire.
