I work at a gas station. We recently had a reminder meeting on a few things. Things like the differences between number 1 and 2 diesel, and why off road fuel is different. And what kind of additives are in our premium diesel fuel.

But my boss, well my bosses bosses boss, kept saying “diesel engines aren’t like gas engines they don’t have carburetors... they have fuel injection systems that push fuel in at high pressure.”

Off-road fuel is mixed with dirt and Monster.

You should have asked “Sir, not to change subjects, but when will the winter blend blinker fluid be in stock?”

Winter blend blinker fluid is important, because cold temperatures can cause havoc on the flux capacitors.

Well, it’s true that diesels don’t have carburetors, and that they have high pressure (direct) fuel injectors. He just omitted that most gas engines no longer have carbs, and that some also use DI.

If he’s your boss’ boss’ boss, he’s probably been around a while, and learned about engines through experience rather than by reading about them, so he’ll always think of a diesel as being defined by not having a carb to fiddle with, and the noise of the high powered direct injectors.

My god.

Anyhow, story time:

When my family owned a gas station in NJ, and I was the gas pumper when the real one one got fired or didn’t show up, my biggest issue was terminology. Super vs Plus vs Super Premium vs Premium, etc. If you ask for Super, well at our station that was the top of the line. If your “other station” referred to super as our Mid Grade, that’s your problem, not mine. The fuel is in the car and I’m not taking it out. Just call out the octane rating if its important to you.

Yup. And E85 is for use in modern (post-1985) vehicles.

It’s a little known fact that the actual formula for off- road fuel is:

-5% dirt

-5% pre-chewed tobacco found in cups inside of bro-trucks

-40% monster

-40% Jack Daniels, everclear, or vodka (depending on local regulations, possibly a combination thereof)

-10% Coors light, bud light, or PBR (depending on local regulations, possibly a combination thereof)

What's off-road fuel?

I think there's a dash of crushed-up male enhancement pills in there somewhere

I’m pretty sure the Space Shuttle used off-road fuel.

Did you say “Did you know gas isn’t a gas at all? It’s a liquid!”

hah. I wonder if anyone actually thinks that.

When I was working at a Ford dealership as a salesmen I once had some one who was renting a new Focus, call and ask if Flexfuel meant he had to use E85.

and the funniest part to me is that if some one my age has a question like that they just whip out their phone and google it, but this guy figured the best thing to do would be to call his local Ford dealer even though he was on Vacation in Florida 2500 miles away.

You’re probably right but it took a lot of self restraint to not stand up and say, “No the difference is they don’t have spark plugs, but rather they souly on high pressure alone for combustion, except on start up when they use glowplugs to aid in the process. And automotive gas engines haven’t used carbonation since like 1993, generally.

There’s a station near me where the card readers just don’t work half the time, and I guess when you prepay they have to select the grade inside. The conversation, every time:

Me - Premium, please.

Owner - You want regular? Unleaded?

Me - No, premium. High-test. Expensive gas.

Owner - Unleaded? Regular?

Me - 91!!!!!!! Please. 91. Not 85, not 87. 91.

I’m not sure if he’s confused because my car doesn’t look like it needs expensive gas or if all of the tanks are full of 85 and he just charges more for some. Maybe it’s because he gets a discount at the pot shop he shares a building with.

Marked gas, it’s got dye in it. Might be called “farm gas” or “marine gas” depending on where you’re from. It’s tax exempt, but not for use in road-going vehicles with the exception of farm trucks

Sounds like he’s getting his wires crossed about them using compression instead of spark plugs to ignite the fuel.

That is a thing isn’t it? They compress something dang nabbit
