And speaking as a proud New Zealander, can I just say that all the shortlist of new choices were shit, and the one chosen was not the least shit of them. What sort of moronic government puts together a flag selection committee without including anyone who knows anything about, y’know, flags. Or good design.

Fortunately, the Chosen One(TM) is likely to be rejected at the next referendum and we’ll keep on happily being confused with Australia until they go republican, or come to their senses and officially become West Island.

That seemed to be the general vibe I got. This new flag thing seems like a major PITA to all of the Kiwis I met (granted, I haven't met that many of your fellow countrymen)

Does the Kiwi you came up with the leading flag choice now live in Australia?

I’ve heard from some Kiwis, two of which now live in England, that many in New Zealand want to go republic sooner than those of Australia. Australians often saying they would either want to stay as they are or simply maintain the status quo than change things for the sake of changing them.

Personally I’d like for New Zealand to keep the Union Flag Canton on it’s flag, but as a Brit it’s not at all my choice (nor should it be) what New Zealanders do with their flag.

Yes, he does. He submitted about 20 flags, 2 of which made the top 5.

I honestly don’t see a lot of groundswell for republicanism in NZ. People are “meh” about the monarchy, but they’re also “meh” about doing anything about it. Apart from anything else, the last couple of moves to pull away from the UK (getting rid of honours and the Privy Council) haven’t worked out too well, and I don’t think anyone trusts the Gummint (or the opposition if they get in power) to come up with a truly non-partisan head of state mechanism.

There will probably be a constitutional discussion when Liz dies, but I don’t see it before then. And even then, I think Oz is more likely to jump than we are; we remain culturally UK-centric where they’re more US-centric.

I was/am always made to believe the opposite from Brits in Oz and Aussies and Kiwis in the U.K. Always good to get new views though.

Recent poles have suggested that Aussies and Kiwis (long with Canucks) have a stronger affinity with the monarchy since William and Kate (along with George and Charlotte) and Harry grew up and visited the countries. They are more open and approachable to the public which can only be a good thing.

I’m a proud Brit and monarchist and it always fills me with pride to see the Union Flag be it on a canton such as a flag of a commonwealth nation such as New Zealand or a country/state that has historical connection such as Hawaii or Cuba that adopted the Union Flag as a fashion symbol.

Doesn’t the Australian constitution still provide for the eventual incorporation of NZ?

Yup. And there are those who believe that economically it would make sense (though not so much now their economy’s in the toilet). Never gonna happen though, people value independence and the right to diss your cousins over economics.
