How Bad is a Bent Steering Knuckle

On an I beam front suspension? I got a second look at my tie rods... Theyre fine. So I either bent my steering knuckle or the play in my ball joint is what is causing my alignment to be out. If the knuckle is bent, could I just re-align it to offset the damage?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Ive been driving my friend’s 2013 Fiat 500C Pop in the mean time, a review will be made on it at some point. But I miss RWD, and I especially miss my 225 lb ft of torque. I have an appt to replace my ball joints tomorrow after work, I hope all I need is that and an Alignment.

Your knuckles are made of cast iron. You’re more likely to crack cast iron than bend it. Actually I’ve never seen bent cast iron.

Probably is a FUBAR knuckle. You can either replace it or install adjustable control arms. I have a bent rear knuckle, and have to do adjustable control arms to fix the camber and toe.

A curb will do that. Sucks, but its cheaper than a time machine.

Control arm? I dont have those. Its I beam, no control arms.

If it’s bent (and it probably isn’t), don’t even consider bending it back. Your life isn’t worth it.

It only takes a little to throw the alignment off but:Positive- once things that can cause play (ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends) are replaced should be fine. Negative-if you whacked it hard enough to bend a rod/radius arm that is a potential break...

In that case, you can attempt to straighten it by extending the tie rod if it allows, otherwise youre looking at a new knuckle. Should be easy to find at a junk yard.

If you havent done wheel bearings, now is a fantastic time.

From what Ive seen there looks to be enough threads left in the adjusting sleeve to do that. And Ive recently done bearings

Other parts would have probably given way before the knuckle bent but it’s not impossible.

Most likely you have a bent the radius arm or radius arm bracket.

Its kinda hard to bend the spindle on those twin I beam trucks. Theyre pretty small, so a tie rod or wheel is where most of the damage usually occurs. What exactly is going on with it?

Also from the factory, theres no adjustement for camber\caster. But you can install these bushing that replace the factory non-adjustable units. Moog has some nice ones. They make so that you can adjust camber/caster by turning them. As long as nothing is too out of wack it should go back in spec. The shop that replaces your ball joints will probably try to sell you some at a mark up and additional labor fee. So I recommend you go into a parts store and bring them with you before you take your truck to be serviced. Most shops are usually cool about it if theyre already doing work on it. Its no extra work if theyre doing ball joints anyways.

They sell them in varying degrees of adjustment. Usually +- 1 to 1.5 degrees should be enough. Theyre about $10-$20 bucks a piece.

Sorry if that was long and weird, Im not very good at explaing things like that usually.

It doesn’t have to bent parts to knock alignment off

The eccentric sleeves that DoYouEvenShift mentioned are great. It can be very difficult to know what is actually bent, if anything, without getting it on an alignment rack. And unless you want to replace your tires every 5k miles don’t try to adjust camber with your tie rods. Impacts like what you experienced can also damage wheel bearings and hubs, so if it’s safe to drive you should get it up to highway speed to listen for any new noises.

Good luck!
