The past 2 days I’ve spent looking at all these cars being painted with a roller !!!
A FUCKING ROLLER !
Look at this paint job on the corvair ..doesn’t look like a roller at all.. and after 3 years it still looks great.
My question tho is if anyone on oppo has ever had the balls to do this ??

like most things I think its less about the product about more about the skill. If you took your time, sanded and polished and used a high quality top coat....why not?

I tried rolling primer on a set of speakers I built this summer, and after trying to sand that down to smooth I ended up spraying the rest, after 6 coats or more with wet sanding in between this is as good as i could get it and from 10ft away they look good, up close its good enough for a 24 hour of lemons car....That said it’s worth it just to get a spray gun if you want it to look really really good....unless you want to spend even more time sanding then you already will have to.

I’ve always been tempted to do it, but when I start looking at YouTube videos of it, it becomes obvious that the real expense is your time.
Especially with how cheap home HVLP stuff has become in the last few years, I would be tempted to do it right with car paint, since that’s specifically designed to be fast for jobber mechanics.
Try reading the Corvair guy’s writeup again and count up how long it takes him to get anywhere. Seems great in pictures, but I’m guessing even he will admit it took longer than he expected.

I refuse to believe that that was done with a roller

pictures on the internet are greatly exaggerated. you wont pick up the same kind of detail you would in person so hard to tell if that is really nice or just a nice picture.

I’ve used Rustoleum cans on cars before, with decent results. That had to take a hell of a lot of sanding if done with a roller.

Never tried a roller, but I re-painted my peely ‘98 Mazda Protege with Krylon Epoxy Appliance White in rattle cans. My hands hurt for a week afterward. It was quite orange-peely, but i did two coats and the color consistency was quite good... man i wish i had just bought a cheap-ass spray gun and borrowed a compressor though.

The finished product is only going to be as good as the prep work. You’re doing all the same prep work for a roller as you would for a Spray.
The down side with the Rustoleum (or any Alkyd Enamel) you’re getting a less durable product than a dedicated Automotive finish.

I don’t have the money for expensive car paint. I doubt a 30 gallon compressor is enough to paint a car.. so I’m kinda stuck into doing this.
Hopefully if I go through with this I can get a decent shine . with paint that cheap I can always touch it up.

At least buy the little clip on can trigger to save your fingers. I did my camper shell rustoleum white over factory red. It came out great on the sides but the top is a bit stripey. Good thing its a tall 4x4 no one can see the shitty part.

I’ve done this method.
Wasn’t that bad. I did a few writeups on it. Search rustolium on oppo.

Yup. The other question is longevity.

Both. Roll for the base and spray for the graphics.

I’m curious - what do most manufacturers use for paint these days? Have a lot of places switched over to water based paints?

I picked up a $40 HVLP gun to paint a wood project of mine. It actually worked surprisingly well for spraying water based wood stain.

Here’s a link to the thread that really kicked the whole Tremclad/Rustoleum roller paintjob as a thing.
It's that orange '69 Charger that you've probably seen. The pictures are pooched now, but his detail of the method is still there.

I’m pretty sure all oems use a waterborne Urethane or Wb Synthetic/Acrylic Enamel.

I saw some youtube videos back in 2010 or so, where a guy painted a suburban with the roller. I think it was ten coats with wetsanding and hit with clear , but it looked amazing. My poor 95 dakota had factory paint that plumb fell off. I hit it with three coats of gloss got tired of it and my ugly 1500 dollar truck was much improved. My cost was like twenty bucks. and i used less than half a gallon of paint
