I was amazed and thrilled by the damped, spring-loaded ashtrays in the BMW 7-Series I recently shot for a feature. What are other cool automotive ashtrays?

Where is that popping out of? Also if you already have something lit, I can see it being kinda annoying.

It’s popping out of the passenger-side rear door, just above the arm rest. I don’t think it’s enough of a delay to be annoying. Seemed cool to me!

Cars still come with ashtrays?

LTD crown victoria. One per door, each with its own cigarette lighter/outlet

Okay that makes more sense now. I was imagining the driver using it for some reason but they are usually in the center.

so useful for the kids in the back, constantly asking me for my lighter!

The Italians and Germans seem to be the holdouts. The Americans wimped out of ashtrays long ago.

Yet the Germans refused to add cupholders to their cars for the longest time. Things that make you go hmmm...

Hey it was the 80s! Haha
But really, I bet kids today wouldn’t mind each having an outlet to plug their phones/tablets/whatever into.

you are right, but just usb plugs would do. I think my 2014 pathfinder has a 12v acc for the middle row, I does have 2 in the front(driver and passenger) and one in the rear. I will check tonight

There was nothing particularly cool about the ashtrays in my first car- a 1989 Chevy Suburban. Except for the fact that there were FIVE of them: One up front (mid-dashboard by the lighter), one on each of the 2nd-row doors, and one on either end of the third row, embedded in the armrests. No Smoker Left Behind.
