Looking out the window today, I noticed the Leaf parked outside our building. As I looked at it, I couldn’t help but notice something that didn’t make much sense, and I’m looking to you to solve this mystery...
There appears to be a very small patch of solar panels on top of the wing on the car. Very small, far too small to contribute in any meaningful way to propelling the car, so I can’t imagine that’s what it is for. What is it for?!

What purpose does this serve?

To run electronics and not strain battery? Like vent fans and such??? Maybe passive charging?? Maybe fake and they just stuff drugs in there to smuggle across borders.

I believe the Prius uses one as well. They will ventilate the passenger compartment on a hot day with a small fan to reduce the electrical load on the air conditioner when you get in the car.

It basically trickle charges the 12V battery at about 5Wh.

I seem to recall that that little guy runs your accessories to keep from pulling from the main batteries.

Iirc it’s to power the electronic memory and other little power drain sources when the car is off, this is to help prevent the car from loosing all of its range just holding on to your radio stations if you are at a buddy's house for a few hours

It’s to run the HVAC so it doesn’t strain the drivetrain
