I get why bikini models might help sell cars, but how does this impossibly sad dog make the car more appealing?

Will somebody please just tell that poor puppy that he’s a good boy and get a smile on his face for the picture?

“Please buy this Viper. My owners work very hard to sell cars, but nobody wants them. So I decided to be a good dog and try to sell some myself. I have to sell at least one or we’ll lose our house this Christmas. You don’t want us to be homeless on Christmas, do you?”
“I can be a good sales dog with your help. You know ‘dog’ is just ‘god’ spelled backward, right? He’s watching everything you do. Dogs go to heaven first, you know. If you buy this Viper and keep us from being homeless this Christmas, I’ll put in a good word for you when I get there later next year after the dog cancer gets me. Oh, I wasn’t supposed to mention that. Any way, help me be a good dog who has dog cancer and buy this Viper. Please?”
