I’m attempting to plan a trip to Germany in early January. Just for a few days, for me and the missus, and nothing car related. Preferably south of the line between Münster - Göttingen - Bayreuth. Any suggestions?

East Belgium or roughly the Vosges area in France would be acceptable as well. Basically something within a day drive of the north of the Netherlands and half a day train ride from Munich.

Drive, don’t take the train. Spend some time on the Autobahn, but explore the back roads as much as you do the big cities. Anything else is selling yourself short.

Sorry, I should’ve added more information: I’m in Germany multiple times a month and have driven countless thousand of kms on the German Autobahn this year alone. I’ll be driving to this weekend location (hence: within a day from the North of the Netherlands). My girlfriend doesn’t own a car and lives in Munich. Hence the half a day by train from Munich.

You can go hang out with my family outside of Bielefeld...

I was there 10+ years ago. Spent a week with relatives and then a week travelling around the country (also made it down to Prague). Sanssouci Palace is awesome, but looks like it’s north and west of where you want to be.

Haven’t been here, but it looks cool: http://www.kaiserburg-nuernberg.de/index.htm

Gotcha. I figured anyone asking here was talking about a vacation. I should’ve guessed from “nothing car related,” and “weekend” bits. :)

Have fun!

I work with a guy whose wife lives in Canada, I live in the UK. How insane is that, I mean you can drive to see your girlfriend but he needs to have a 9-10 hour flight, not to mention travelling between the two airports.

Heidelberg? Cologne? Freiburg? All touristy at least in the summer.

You can never go wrong with Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Cologne or even Hamburg. Depends on what you want to do and see

Well, I do need a 9 hour (including stops) drive to reach her. It’s 900 km/560 miles trip one way. Certainly better than a 9-10 hour flight though.

I might be a little biased here, but Heidelberg should fit your bill quite right. Located almost perfect for you (4-5 hour train ride from Munich, about 600kms or 6 hours from Groningen), and it really is a nice place for a weekend getaway. Beautiful old town, river, old castle, student bars... you name it.

Take a stroll through the old town, go up to the castle and enjoy the view, hike the Philosophenweg up to the Thingstätte (amphitheater which looks ancient but was built by the Nazis), or even take a short trip (20 minute drive) to speyer and see the ancient Cathedral...

If you are interested, I could recommend some restaurants with local food as well.

Oh, and did I already mention that it is fucking beautiful?

I’ll be in Deutchland for the next few weekends. We are splitting our time between Stutgart and Munich while taking day trips to Salzburg and Strausburg.

I know it would be a haul but Vienna and Prauge are totally worth 1/2 to 3/4 day train rides.

Yes, but which one? I own 4. I could also take the Galant. Who am I kidding, I’ll take the 406.

My brother in law (her brother) is a doctor there, but I’ve never visited and I’m not sure she has either. The BIL’s got a tiny room there.

I’m going to create a top 3, book all 3 with the free cancellation option and present her with the options at Christmas. This will be in that top 3.

Living the Peugeot Dream! I can’t wait to find out whether the 308 R Hybrid will be produced. But I must confess I’m more of a Citroën man.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Zugspitze if you’ve never been. It might be a little far if you’re driving though.

Solid choice and a really good idea for a x-mas present to the SO. I will keep that idea in the back of my head.

Köln is too well known to the both of us, I’ve been to Frankfurt and Hamburg is too inconvenient in location for my girlfriend. I’ll have to look into Nürnberg, thanks!

I don’t know how many times you have been in the Rhein Valley, but some of the small towns have some hiking trails and such.

Köln Hbf is about 4 hours from München Hbf by Deutsche Bahn. You should be able to get there from the top of the Netherlands in about the same time by car.

You could always start with the Kölner Dom and then work your way in a direction out of the city by car. If there is something playing in the Music Dome, that could be an option. I’ve never lacked for things to do in the Rhein Valley.

Nürnberg is actually not that bad. There’s a castle and the historic city wall. The Deutsche Bahn museum is also in Nürnberg if you are into that. Nürnberg reminds me a lot of my hometown.
