So I sold the Saab. It’s gone so now I can do other things.

I lined up two showings for today. The first guy bought it. I call the other guy up and he gets irritate about it. He was driving from about an hour away and was almost here when I called him, but it was my car and I sold it. Isn’t that the way craigslist works? Where I list a car and sell it?

Did I do something wrong?

If I did and you’re reading this I’m sorry.

Even if I didn’t do anything wrong I will still admit I may have inconvenienced him quite a bit and I’m sorry about it.

You are only wrong if you told him anything that gave him a reasonable expectation that you would hold it until he got to see it. Otherwise, it’s “first come, first served”.

But it’s still appropriate to feel sympathy for his inconvenience.

I never said I would hold it, I could have told him someone else was seeing it before him though.

Regardless it’s in the past now and I’m excited for my next project to be announced.

I like the validation of being told this. I’m a sensitive person that doesn’t like pissing off strangers.

Thanks.

You have feeling because you are apparently a well adjusted, normal human being. Unless you told him you where waiting or holding it for him, the first rule of cl applies: first with cash gets it.

Just imagine if you sold it to this angry guy and then something broke.

Thanks. I needed this validation from Oppo. It was enough seeing my daily driver of 2 years go away (also my first car) and then this guy getting irritate over the phone made me just feel bad.

That’s a very good point. Something will defiantly break.

Similar to a situation where I was selling a car, and had multiple lookers in the first week. First guy came and drove it, said he was interested, but didn’t give me a deposit or any specific timeline for deciding. I said I had others looking at the car that week. He called back a few days later but I had sold it to the very next person who had looked at it. The way I see it, the first guy walked away with no promises made on either side, and the second guy saw a nice car and made a deal on the spot.

I still felt bad though. Briefly anyway.

Yep, but he’s probably the kind of guy that expects a $2,000 SAAB with 200,000 miles to be a perfect and reliable car that will last him forever without ever having to do maintaince.

I understand you 100% and I also don’t want to piss off strangers, but the old saying you snooze you loose applies here.

Only dickish if you told him you’d hold it for him to look at. I had a car sold out from under me like that, it kind of pissed me off when I got there, cash in hand, after having been told he’d have the car there for me to check out an hour prior.

Depends on if you told him someone else was coming to look at it. If he knew someone else was looking at it first, then that’s the risk you take and there’s not much to be angry about. If you told him he’d be able to see it at a certain time, then he had reasonable expectation to be able to see it at that time and it would be reasonable to be a little upset.

I know it’s first come but that was a bit jerk-ish if he told you he was coming from an hour away and you didn’t say there was some one coming before him. It’s just decent courtesy. I know I’d be pissed if this happened to me

If you told him somebody else was taking a look, he doesn’t have any reason to be mad.
