40 years?
What about the current Boxster?
edit: oh 4 cylinder. Like that’s supposed to be an important thing...

It’s not important at all. It’s literally just another peg in the downsizing trend we’ve been seeing, oh, for the last decade or so.
Porsche’s marketers want you to think it’s an important thing. They want to drape it in romantic history of race cars and how a 4-cylinder engine supposedly transforms the existing cars into something completely different.
This is Porsche we’re talking about. It’s not different. To avoid upsetting their fans they’ll keep it as similar as possible, dialing out as much turbo noise/lag as possible.
The 718 thing is a farce

Porsche has the history, and they are using it. While I wish they had re-engineered and kept the weight down, it’s still rumored to have 295 horsepower in the base model (that’s only 15 less than a 2012 Boxster S).
I also would have preferred a different model designation, but I wouldn’t call it a farce. It’s an obvious marketing move, though not as obvious as 714, which they stayed away from.
