The reasons Jalops don’t buy new cars is because automakers insist on forcing us to buy stuff like power windows, carpets, radios, and moveable seats. If they would just sell us an engine, manual transmission, some plastic lawn chairs bolted to the floor and saran-wrap to see out of, and charge a maximum of eight grand, we’d buy new cars! We swear!

I think most new cars are kind of shit. Most of them feel like I’m driving a spring-loaded H-platform car with lag now. Yes, I’d buy a stupid cheap manual everything penalty box. That being said, I’m seriously considering a Mirage.

I guess jalops just don’t want cars, and really just want a version of the Ford Racing Catalog.

Choose your own engine, body, seats, and amenities. Some assembly required.

Caterham: “Umm, we do that, guy...”

Silence, knave. We all know you don’t sell kit cars in the US at easily affordable prices. ($31.5K is *not* affordable, which is the current cost of a Seven 280 in CKD form without drivetrain)

BMW Dealer: Do you want this giant computer screen on your dash? It is $3000 and gives you GPS!
Me: No. My phone does it for free. I do want the better sound system
BMW: Well, you have to have the giant screen for the better system
Me: I’ll live without it.

If they could replace the steering wheel with a stick, and make an engine that burns kerosene I’d be in.

Here at Seat Safety Switch Motors, we’re dedicated to selling Jalops only the finest in highly irresponsible murder machines.

For instance, did you know that none of our cars are even capable of being registered, much less having been fully crash tested? That’s just one of the many ways we keep weight - and prices - down.

Sick of high gas prices? Well you can fuck off because all we have is V8s.

I bought my car new. It’s a 2013. No power windows, no power seats. It’s got carpeted flooring, and power locks, but only because there’s no actual physical locking mechanism for the driver/passengers to use. They’re all hidden out-of-reach within the door panels. My car also comes with a manual gearbox, but I got the auto.

The dealer said they could install navigation on my car for around $590.00. I said “Uh, my $299.00 phone does that. Thanks.”

I knew a guy who was selling a Seven with an SR20 for $15k. I put the ad up here on Oppositelock, and no one was interested.

My car has four electric windows, with switches by the driver’s right hand - and that, plus a radio, are it for toys. Frankly, I could live without the electric windows. Wouldn’t mind some modern safety features, though.

Ooh, that reminds me, I wonder how much Dacia Sanderos are down to now.

Blah! I did make the mistake on heated seats.

BMW: Want heated seats? $700
Me: I live in Florida! They heat themselves!
4 years later I move to Maryland
Me: Well, that decision was dumb...

NO I don’t think that’s the case at all, I think the problem is that everyone seems to want a RWD M3-power-level V12 super sports car that gives out 40 mpg, is a diesel, is cheap to run, can be serviced by themselves, have a full factory warranty (that doesn’t get voided by a non-certified mechanic works on it), can rev to 10k rpm, is reliable and costs 10k USD, and that just plainly doesn’t exist. Also they want manual windows and little trim, but then get mad when they are not included in the price and are forced to get optionals...

The Jalopnik and Oppo comentariat has been begging for the FR-S and BRZ for AGES to happen and when it does, suddenly nobody wants it and everyone wants Ford to build the Fiesta RS and THEN they will buy that...

Right. The key example for me is the Chevy SS.

“Chevy build us a RWD V8 high perfomance car that’s also a practical sedan!”

“Okay.”

“No, we wanted one with a MANUAL!”

“Okay, here you go”

“NO NO NO! When did we say we wanted leather or Satellite Radio? Now this car is too expensive. We’ll just buy one in 12 years or so”

“...”

Well I mean that’s just the consequence of people wanting a brand they can’t actually afford, in Mexico our most basic BMW, Audi and Mercedes cars come with power everyhting and leather and sunroofs and sometimes even AMG/M-Sport/S-line kits, from the base model, and the options lists are pretty slim, and we get trim levels if you want more, but you get everything you could possibly want from the middle level, generally reserving big wheels, power trunks and fancy solar panel sunroofs for the top of the line series.

But then again, only the top 10% of the population can actually afford a base 320i and only about the top 5% can afford anything above a 335i/528i

No, I think the original poster as well as myself, just want a car. We don’t want something so fancy it looks like the bridge of the Enterprise. I don’t want a thousand buttons or things that will break eventually and require a $1000 repair to get a motor in the seat fixed. I want a comfortable car to drive.

My E92 M3 was customized as a Sport Package and removed almost anything that had a motor, button or odd feature. I got the big wheels, manual transmission and manual seats. It is basic in the sense it is an awesome driving car and not something covered in electronics. So I get what the OP was after.

When you are talking about an M3 it’s a different ball game, sometimes it costs money to have a basic car, but in a performance car it’s what you want, I’m more talking about the kind of person that gets the most basic of basic 3 series instead of a loaded Accord o Mazda 6 because they want the badge, but it becomes natural when talking about premium brands, think for example the Audi A1, most people got these when they came out instead of a Mazda 3 (inspite of space needs) just because they got a fancy badge, and then proceeded to spec the lowest car they could and end up with less than the bigger, more powerful and better equipped 3 would have gotten them...

PS. I’m a guy who bought a 350Z instead of an (albeit used, more expensive) 370Z, just because I wanted a basic (still Bose) stereo, no keyless stuff and most of the performance, and then keep the rest of the money for upgrades...

Exaclty, it’s the vice of Used Cars, I personally went to look at the new Mini S, loved it, could afford it, was perfect, but I still bought a 350Z for 2/3 of the price...

What are your thoughts on the 350Z? I’m considering one myself.

I found a clean 100% stock 06 with just 88,000kms (55,000 miles) for $13K cad. To me that seems like a fantastic buy but I could be wrong.

Really like it, really tough to get anything this good to drive fast and this good looking for that amount of money (in Mexico at least), though you have to bare in mind mine has 6500 miles on the clock at the moment so I can’t speak for the reliability side of things though I’ve seen some with mad amounts of miles in relatively good shape.

(Mine is an ‘04 and was about 17000 CAD with 5500 miles on the odo)

Reliability doesn’t concern me all that much. I see them all the time with 200k+ kms and the VQ35 is a pretty solid unit to begin with.

This would just be a secondary car for me so I would probably only put 3000-4000 miles on it yearly.

Yup, the same for me, I have a Mazda 6 that I use regularly and this is just an occasional fun car, IMO buy it, put an Invidia Gemini Exhaust on it, and enjoy!!!!
