So I went to check out a Dodge SX 2.0 today (Neon in America). Cosmetically and fundamentally, it was pretty solid. No leaks, no rust, good suspension and steering. There are, however, a few issues. Firstly, its oil pump is on the way out. Secondly, it fuel starves up steep hills. It needs a new coil, and there is noticeable amounts of gear whine. The car is listed for $2250, and the parts cost $450 or so. Should I shoot the guy an offer for $1800 and see what happens? It only has 70,000 miles of commuting on it. ACR booty shot for your time.

No, don’t do that.

$1,200 or so sounds reasonable.

Interior BC car market = hyperinflated prices. $1800 might be a tad low, we’ll see.

That’s probably a $1,200 car where I live. Don’t overpay, especially if it’s a hooptie.

$1200 is a high mileage, beat-up, automatic 01 where I live.

Yup. Plus, I face the issue of either paying $1800 for this car now, or paying $2400 for a car in similar overall condition in the spring.

What year? I had a 2004, and from what youve said, its a lemon. Gear noise? Run. Fuel starvation up a hill? Run faster.

No rust you say? Theyre only rust treated on the outside, I assure you, theres rust, and its bad. Tap on the rockers pretty hard, chances are they’ll feel a little soft towards the wheel wells.

Save yourself a world of hurt and find something else.

That’s a liiiitle ridiculous for an old Neon.

How about bringing a car form another part of Canada?

2005. The rockers are solid, even when tapped hard. I’ll try seeing other vehicles.

Oil pump on the way out

Can you elaborate on this?

The low oil pressure warning light comes on when slogging up steep hills around 2000 RPM, yet the oil level is fine. I’ve done some research, and it looks like the oil pump is the culprit.

Bad oil pump = bad engine

gear whine = bad transmission

Run away
